Soul Expectation

Avery watched Sans go. Some work had to be done before the humans return. Avery stayed in case Gaster had any more questions. He did. "How... how long? How long has this been going on, Avery?" Is there a way you can stop this? You are a human too -" Avery could understand his hopes, have a human at his side probably gave a false hope in a situation he was so new to. Unfortunately, she knew she was useless, even to this situation. She was betrayed by her fellow human, who now knew of her existence. "I can't do anything to stop this. I don't have the determination that Frisk does... plus, the monster soul further weakens my dedication soul trait. Sorry, Father..." Gaster knew almost immediately that he'd asked wrong of Avery. "I-I'm sorry, that was wrong of me to ask... it is no excuse that I am new to these... resets." Avery wordlessly shook her head. "It's fine, father. In answer to your other question, Frisk has been resetting the world through the same couple of weeks for years. Long enough, where times before these few weeks have long since forgotten." Avery answered.

Avery wondered, not for the first time, why she was here. A human amongst the monsters. Before Gaster took her in as his child, what he had in store for her. If she would've gained the resets if Frisk hadn't fallen. Then again, reset seemed before his time, even after the barrier went up. How many years' worth of stored magic and soul traits had made the reset accessible to someone like Frisk, and was there ever a glimpse of a possibility that Avery had had it without knowing? Avery dismissed those thoughts as she went back to work. Dwelling on it would do nothing, and she, like Sans, had to prepare for the child. Avery had a bad feeling about this coming reset. With all the new reveals to Frisk, she was scared that the child was going to try and figure out how she fared in a genocide. What her role would be, free of the river. The same went with Gaster, who was completely "new" to the game altogether. Troubling times seemed to be ahead, and no one was sure of what was coming, as they had in previous routes.

Gaster was up and moving, getting ready to go home and see his youngest child again. Of course, as soon as he stepped out of the lab, he suggested they take Avery's boat. Sans knew he was never going to escape her now, and that was a good thing. Sans led his old man to where Avery quietly waited. "Tra la la, would you like to ride my boat?" She asked, though Sans noted that she seemed more morose than before. Something happened after he stepped away. The two got in, and Avery pushed off the dock, letting magic bring her dear boat/dog to life as they headed for Snowdin. The ride never took long, and she and Gaster were silent the entire ride while Sans observed. "See you tonight, tra la." They bid the skeletons fairwell. Sans took Gaster home, asking questions about what happened. Gaster muttered how he may have brought up the wrong question regarding the resets and Avery's soul. Sans could suddenly understand the reasons she was being silent. It had to be hard to have such a powerful soul and have expectations placed on it for that very reason... Sans never thought he'd sympathize with Avery, but here he was.
