Life At The Hollands

The living room is a mess, soft toys, blocks, and books scattered everywhere, but I can't bring myself to care. The sunlight streams through the curtains, catching the sparkle in my y/c/n's eyes as they giggle uncontrollably at Tom. He's on the floor, dramatically pretending to be Spider-Man, complete with exaggerated web-slinging noises and acrobatics that make me both laugh and worry about the furniture.

T - "Did you see that flip, love?"

he asks, grinning up at me from his crouched position. y/c/n one claps enthusiastically, clearly convinced her dad is a real superhero. I can't help but laugh as I sit on the couch, a cup of tea warming my hands.

Y/n - "Careful,"

I call out as our toddler makes a clumsy attempt to pounce on Tom, their tiny arms flailing in an attempt to mimic his moves. Tom catches them mid-air, spinning them around, their giggles filling the roomThis is our chaos: pure, unfiltered joy with a side of exhaustion. The mornings are often early, the nights sometimes sleepless, but these moments make it all worth it. Pancake Sundays are a staple, and Tom insists on flipping them, even though half the time, they end up on the floor. He's already promised to teach our toddler his "technique" as soon as they're old enough.

I glance over at the wall, where photos from our adventures hang. There's one from Halloween all three of us in matching Spider-Man costumes and another from a day at the park, with our toddler grinning proudly at the top of the slide. Tom's laughter pulls me back to the present.

 T - "Alright, little one"

he says, lifting them onto his shoulders.

T - "Let's give Mum a break and head to the kitchen. How about we bake some cookies?"

I shake my head, knowing full well the "baking" will involve more flour on the floor than in the bowl. But I wouldn't trade this for anything.

*A few hrs later*

The house smelled like fresh-baked cookies and faint traces of lavender from the diffuser I'd set up earlier. The chaos of cleaning, toddler-proofing, and prepping food had taken most of the morning, but now everything was ready or as ready as it could be when you've got a toddler determined to undo every bit of tidying.

Our toddler toddled into the room just then, holding a stuffed toy in one hand and a cookie in the other one I definitely hadn't approved.

T - "What's that, love?"

Tom asked, swooping them up in his arms.

T - "Stealing cookies already? You've got the Holland mischief gene for sure."

Before I could chime in, the sound of the doorbell rang.

T - "They're here!"

Tom practically bounded to the door with our little one on his hip.

In came Nikki and Dom, Tom's parents, followed closely by his brothers. Nikki pulled me into a warm hug, her signature perfume enveloping me.

N - "Oh, it's so good to see you, darling. And look at this little one!"

she cooed, reaching for the y/c/n

The house came alive in seconds. Dom and Tom's brothers filled the space with easy laughter, catching up on everything from work to favourite golf matches. Paddy, quickly became our toddler's best friends with her the minute he saw her. His brother and former teacher's child was really getting a along with Paddy. I definitely can't wait to tell her how her father and I met.

In the kitchen, Nikki helped me finish up a few dishes.

T - "You're doing such a lovely job with everything,"

 she said.

T - "And this one"

she gestured toward the toddler now running circles around Tom

T - "has such a sparkle. You two are such great parents."

Y/n - "thx nikki"

The day passed in a blur of stories, jokes, and moments that felt like snapshots of happiness. Tom and his brothers ended up in the backyard kicking a ball around while Dom held y/c/n, explaining the finer points of the game as if she understood every word.

By the time the evening rolled around, the house was quieter. Nikki and I sat on the couch, sipping tea, while Tom played guitar softly in the corner, our toddler curled up against him, eyes fluttering shut.

N - "Thank you for today,"

Nikki said, reaching over to squeeze my hand.

N - "Family's everything, and it's clear you've made such a wonderful home here."

I smiled, my heart full as I watched Tom hum softly to the now-sleeping toddler.

Y/n - "It's chaotic, but it's ours," I said.

And it really was.
