edith
The hospitals food made me want to gag but it was better than nothing. though i was finding myself missing mine and dennis' shitty cooking.
i watched noah pick at the lumpy mashed potatoes on his tray - using his good arm. his only arm.
when he awoke, it was probably one of the worst experiences i have ever had to witness. he was broke, and it was hard for him to even understand what had happened.
the past week, i've barley left this hospital room with the exception of using the toilet and to throw rude vindictive questions at the doctors, asking about my brothers well being.
all the reply's i had got of course was "he is going to be fine." or "let me run a couple more scans."
i hated this place, and i could tell that noah hated it as well. i just wanted to get him out of here. to a place where we can both be safe, but i didn't have the money, and i probably wouldn't for eons.
i didn't know what i was going to do.
noah needed his healthcare payed for, and dennis simply couldn't afford it either. i was completely and utterly trapped.
sighing, i pushed the food tray away from me and glanced over at noah who was still playing with his.
"you okay?" i ask, giving him a small smile.
he nods. "fine."
"look, i promise you everything is going to be fine. i'm not gonna let anything happen to you. noah" i question, but his gaze was else where and i knew that there was no talking any sense into him now - not after he'd zoned out.
i sighed again, and laid my head on the pillow that rested on the edge of the armchair i'd camped out in all week. just as i were about to close my eyes, the door opened and dennis walked in.
"noah!" he smiles. "how are you?"
noah didn't respond. he didn't even look at him. dennis shifted uncomfortably and turned his attention to me instead.
"edith, you need to come home."
"get out of here dennis." I glare at him. "why are you here anyway."
"to make sure you're okay. i'm sick of letting you push me around constantly. you need to know that someone cares about you. loves you. i love you edith. now come home. staying here isn't doing you or noah any good."
"please dennis. just leave."
"no. not until you agree to let me take you home."
i sighed. "i cannot leave him here alone dennis."
"i'm fine edith. really, you have been here all week for me. i don't you to be ill." noah says.
"but-" i was cut off by noah, and dennis' firm looks. "fine. i will see you first thing tomorrow morning." i say looking at noah. i kiss him on the forehead. "love you."
"love you." he mutters back, and dennis leads me out of the hospital room.
"don't you feel better now?" he asks.
"don't fucking patronize me dennis, just because i'm out of that room, doesn't mean i'm staying with you."
"but i thought-"
"well you thought wrong."
i fumbled around my tatty bag, for my phone. i knew it was around here somewhere...aha! i scrolled through my contact list until i came to nellie's number. i clicked the call button, and waited.
