Irogana's pov:
I got a call just after evening meal time from a very frantic Avranga asking me to come to the lab for emergency treatment. I was a little confused at first because as far as I was aware she didn't have any pets and although Katorn, her gravni brother usually has dealings with me due to his line of work I thought I had received all of the creatures from the latest mission. Then I remembered the message Katorn had sent me that I had yet to read. I found it after I told them to head over. Two of the captured creatures were staying with Katorn due to certain circumstances and Katorn was trying to book an appointment with me to have them checked out. It was due to the specific modifications that had been done to them.
When they arrived just after I did I rushed them into the lab taking the unconscious chimera with me and locking the others out. I will take a look at the modified fox but right now he seems to be stable and my immediate attention is on the other little one.
Extremely high fever and a rapid pulse, this little guy was in a bad way. I have seen similar symptoms before with other cross species genetic alterations. The message I had received about these two was that the little fox had been enhanced rather than being turned into a chimera. It's a lot less invasive and harmful compared to full cross species fusion hybrids. I usually try to reverse the effects of the fusion or at least limit and stop the changes progression. unfortunately not all cases are successful and although i try my best some slowly deteriorate due to rapid chromosomal decay.
I spent three whole hours trying to at the very least stabilize the creature. The zedral dna was reacting badly to the norgash dna causing the human dna to suffer in the middle of it all. I decided to sedate the creature to prevent any out bursts with him being in an unfamiliar place with his instincts running high. I really didn't want him to hurt himself while I am conducting treatment. I was slowly losing hope that I would be able to preserve this innocent little being's life. The way things were going it seemed as though the unstable mental state caused a visceral reaction within his tiny body and now a war was raging that I can't seem to stop. I was at a loss, every idea was disproven to be a good one each and every time.
I was getting stressed and the shimmering of my skin was only intensifying. I just wanted to help both katorn and velseir but it felt like I was just failing them instead. Seeking comfort I began running my fingers through his soft nut brown fur and I felt myself physically relax. The agitated shimmering of my skin slowly faded away as I petted him. He began to stir at my touch and his face scrunched up as though he was still in pain.
Suddenly he jolted awake and before I could react he latched onto my arm and sunk his teeth into my skin. My skin lacked any adaptive armour due to being caught off guard thus it was easily punctured by his fangs drawing copious amounts of blood. It hurt but I remained calm just petting his head until he released his bite. He had consumed some of the blood while he was latched on. my blood contains a lot of helpful and harmful components due to my nature but he seemed to be fine even after consuming so much of it. In fact he seemed better than fine. The rabbid look he had since getting here had faded and was replaced by a very confused face and a quizzical look in my direction.
I offered out my hand to him and he crawled over to me cautiously while watching me intently for any sudden movements. He seemed more lucid all of a sudden and his fever had almost subsided. I was aware of the different properties of my blood but I never expected anything to react to it in this way. I will need to study this.
I'll inform Katorn of the situation to help calm his nerves and hopefully find a solution soon. After leaving the room and greeting the two of them I noticed how drained and exhausted they both seemed.
"I have gotten him stable for the moment. I will have to conduct more tests to have him return to a more balanced state."
"May I see him? Just for a minute."
"Yes, you may. Just know that although he looks better it is only temporary until I can find a more permanent solution."
I guided him into the room with his fury companion following close by. Avranga stayed outside not wanting to cause more pain and confusion. Velseir sat on the exam table, legs crossed playing with a cloth I had left out on the tool tray. Katorn's face relaxed considerably when his gaze fell upon the boy.
Katorn's pov:
I entered the room wanting to see him. I heard he was doing better but I was still preparing for the worst. That's when I saw him, the beautiful creature that had made me a bundle of worry just hours before. I relaxed considerably when I saw him sitting there. I called out to him gently. He was so adorable just playing with the piece of fabric he'd found. When he looked at me my heart melted, he was more 'innocent' than normal and the usual intelligence that his eyes held was nowhere to be found. He had a more childish demeanor as if everything wrong didn't happen and that everything was okay. He did seem better but I could tell he wasn't like a piece of himself wasn't there. If he remained in this state he wouldn't truly be him anymore. Although he is cute and adorable, this isn't how he is meant to be.
I wish I could have found him sooner so he wouldn't have had to go through all of the pain but even though it was painful and he might not want to remember him getting better was what was best.
All of a sudden a strange sound came from velseir, it sounded sad and pained. Liquid was pouring from his eyes down his face. I remember reading about this behavior in the human files. Humans do this for a number of reasons but it's usually due to sadness or pain. Was he hurt? Did he find something upsetting?
rushing over to him I scooped him up into my arms to provide what I hoped to be comfort. No matter what I tried he just wasn't calming down. Irogana started looking a bit panicked too while I was trying to settle him. I started to rock him in my arms. This outburst reminded me of my brother's nogi, she would whine until she got what she needed. I tried handing him the cloth he was playing with but he wanted none of it.
Irogana was rummaging
looking for things to give him when she caught her hand on a scalpel in one of the drawers. She cried out in suprise and velseir started looking for her and reaching out in her direction. I brought him to her and she took him from me after finding some gauze to put over her wound. It hurt me to see velseir calm down at her touch instead of mine but I also understood. I was part of the reason he was here in the first place.
He kept trying to hug lrogana's arm and when he finally wrangled it into his grasp he took the gauze and started suckling on it. She took it off him and he started to cry again. Then she held out her wounded hand to him and he quickly latched on and began to suck on that instead.
He was drinking her blood but not only was she not surprised she was the one who offered it to him.
When velseir started making that happy purring noise he always used to make when I would scratch the right spot it stung. Was it better to leave him with her? I couldn't help him and she could and all I ever seemed to do was scare him and stress him out. He clearly liked Irogana better.
Who am I to get in the way of that.
