First to Last

Have you ever thought about the first time you've ever done something?

The first time you saw something?

The first time you said something?

The first time you tasted something?

The first time you smelled something?

Your first breath.

Your first steps.

Your first words.

Your first hello.

Your first goodbye.

Your first day of school.

Your first hug.

Your first kiss.

Your first date.

Your first piece of cake.

Your first holiday.

The first car you drive.

Your first alcoholic drink.

Your first child.

What about the last time you've done these things?

What if you've already had a last?

You've never thought about all the lasts, have you?

The last time you hugged your grandparents.

The last time you saw one of your friends.

The last time you said goodbye to your parents.

The last time you got to drive your car.

The last time you walked into school.

Your last concert.

Your last hug.

Your last goodbye.

Your last school assignment.

Your last day at a job.

The last time you get to sleep.

Your last book.

The last night in your childhood home.

The last time you visit a city.

What about all the chances you didn't take?

What about the things you didn't do that caused all your lasts? What about the reasons your lasts even exist?

The last time you saw a boy or girl you liked because you CHOSE not to make a move.

The last time you got to go on stage because you CHOSE not to perform.

Because you CHOSE to let your stage fright get the best of you.

The last time you got to listen to music because you CHOSE to keep it on too loud.

The last time you get to eat pork because you CHOSE not to cook it all the way.

The last time you see a friend because you CHOSE to value your feelings over their own.

All of your lasts have to be caused by something: someone died, maybe you died.

You were selfish.

You CHOSE not to do something.

You CHOSE to do something.

You said something.

Every one of your lasts exist because someone bigger than you has a plan for you.

Every one of your firsts are especially special because you get to experience something new.

Not every single one will be enjoyable. Like your first time trying a lemon or getting rejected.

Your lasts are what define you as a person though.

Because you will learn to value yourself as well as those around you.

You will learn from your mistakes and make better choices because of them.

Your firsts are the (mostly) enjoyable things. Because everyone is a little curious and everyone likes to try new things.

Your lasts are what keep you cautious though. They are what tell you when something isn't a good idea.

Remember that when you leave without saying goodbye to your parents:

Remember that when you let your friend walk away angry:

Remember that when you say something you don't mean:

Remember that when you do something without thinking:

Another last will be created.

Not every last a bad thing just as every first isn't a good thing.

As you get older you will have less firsts and more lasts.

You will become wiser. As they say: the older the wiser.

You can help those around you make better directions and stop them from making a last, but they will not learn.

You can just let that plan that someone else has for them continue on uninterrupted. And let them learn from their lasts.

Like I said before:

Your lasts are what define you; they are what make you into the person you are today.

Your firsts are what make life worth living. They help cure your curious mind. They help society in moving forward.

Both lasts and firsts have the ability to destroy you though.

In a matter of mere seconds your life or someone else's can be taken away.

Be cautious but curious. Try new things but don't get too wild.

Because if you do:

You won't have anymore firsts. All of your firsts will then become lasts. And your time will soon run out.
