It had been a long day, I couldn't stop replaying the image of Kenny Cat in under the sink crying.
She was scared to death, but she was quiet the entire time. How many four year olds could brag about being smart enough to silently cry?
How many kids her age had ever been targeted so constantly?
She was strong, a little fighter and she had the right to be.
Her name literally meant 'born of fire' and that's all she's been enduring lately. The flames of being a Lyon.
I look up at the clock, 11 minutes left of my morning class and then I look at my professor.
She seems to notice the time and gives me a small nod.
"We'll continue the rest of the lecture on Wednesday, I understand some of you have other, more important engagements."
A few students turned to glance at me. I guess word had gotten around to the other professors about my thing with cordiality.
I scratch my nail on my denim jeans and smile.
"Thank you, Dr. Williams."
My professor nods her head and I slide my notebook into my VS backpack. I sling the straps over my shoulders and hold my ink pen in hand.
I make my way down the steps to the exit when
"Ms Lyon, would you stay behind please ?"
She glanced at the clock, I still had 9 minutes.
I nod, letting everyone leave as I walk up to her desk.
" I'll make this quick because quite frankly, I care about a woman who cares about her kid, you need to watch your back. I'm not supposed to tell you this but I work for the Ryder's, well before I married I was one. King is my nephew and normally I wouldn't butt into his affairs but, you should know, he wants you. Not just as an investment but wants you. I've never seen him this way about a girl before, after his mother died he swore off love. Then he saw you, maybe two years ago. You were holding hands with a little girl, she had dropped her ice-cream cone on his shoes. "
Her eyes twinkle as if the memory was hers to remember.
"You bowed your head at him and apologetically began wiping his shoes. He said what you did, it made him feel like royalty and he couldn't understand why a woman as beautiful as you were on her hands and knees cleaning off his shoe."
I cut her off
" I was so embarrassed of Kennah's accident , his shoes were obviously new and she was such a clumsy little thing then, so innocent ."
My voice lightens as I remember the way she was so long ago.
"Yes , well King refused to let you stay there cleaning his shoes and he moved his feet back ."
"I remember , he grabbed my hands and told me that a beautiful girl shouldn't worry about such material things. He didn't talk like he was from here . To proper , kinda reminded me of me."
"He tried to pursue you, tried numerous times but you shut him down constantly , even went so far as to explain your relationship with your daughters father."
"We had no relationship , my feelings were already invested into someone else."
"Yes, Mars right ? He was so undone for weeks about it . He seemed to have moved on until he found out who you were, who your lineage consisted of. The only daughter of Cruz and Ariella Lyon."
" I was the golden child, but it didn't make life easier for me, because I was a girl my father expected me to be harder than my brothers. He didn't want to worry about my safety. He turned me into Sin."
