I hugged my daughter, and then pulled her beanie further down her head. Dropping to my knees pressing my lips tightly to her forehead she whispers,
"Momma , I don't want to go today, can't I stay with Poppie?"
I gave a small smile . My father was busy with work and I wanted her to be in that environment as little as possible.
"Kennah, mommie wants you in school , so you can fill that pretty head of yours with something positive."
She pouted slightly before smiling at me,
"Momma , do you think if I fill my head up with good things then my real daddy will come back?"
I was completely floored . My face drained of color and my smile fell. I quickly recovered,
"Baby, you have a real daddy who loves you , and you should fill your head up for you , not a man, but I'm sure wherever your father is, he's thinking about you. "
I kissed her forehead again and she giggled
"Awe momma." She tried her best to seem exasperated but I knew she loved when I smothered her in kisses.
I stood up looking slightly flustered as I blew her kisses and urged her to play with the other kids.
Thinking about how Mars would feel knowing his little girl still thought of her real father. I was caught off guard when she seemed delighted and turned away from me.
"She does great you know."
I turned to see Rose, Kennah's nanny. I nodded and tried to muster up a smile.
"She asks for him spur the moment now, calls Mars daddy but still wonders why her real one abandoned her."
She gave me a sincere look, cerulean blue eyes boring into me. It was strange, I used to feel so subconscious around her, my tattoos itching under her stare but that was before we became friends and she married my brother Asher.
"She is a smart four year old, she would never allow anyone to replace the dad she knows, maybe she's curious about why hers didn't think she was worth enough to stay."
As Rose said the words, I knew instantly she had spoken true. I nodded again, telling her agreed.
"I know but it's so hard to even think about that time in my life. I was so lost then."
She embraced me and I took a deep breath
" I'm going to be a little late this month , school and trying to keep my fathers business away from Kenny-Kat is hard , it's costing me."
Rose nodded, so much understanding in her eyes . She knew the business and the trouble it put Asher in but she respected his decision to work for our father and loved that I wanted more for my little girl.
"Kai , I've told you before, you're my sister in law, what you're doing for your daughter , you don't have to make a payment. I love that little girl , I love you, and I want you both safe. We're family, you owe me nothing."
"Rosie, I can't impose, and I don't want her living the way I did. She's protected by the gang but she's a target because of them . I'm so tired and my dad- he's trying but, thugging is his life , he can't manage us and his business. Mars doesn't have the time to come home during the night and I can't help but stay awake thinking he won't come home at all."
"Well Mars is a strong man babe , he would Always find a way back to you , but my door is always open. And another thing, your father loves you , if it came down to choosing you and Kenny or the money he'd choose-"
