I'm not dead, sorry. :P I told you over a year ago now that I was working on a Slender series book that'd deep dive into every single video series made about Slenderman. I plan to stick to that but as you can imagine, it takes a lot of time and energy. I feel bad making you wait so long though, so I'd like to give you a preview of what I've been working on. This chapter will be an example of what you can expect from the book. PLEASE feel free to give suggestions on what you do and don't like. (: It's a rough draft and even though the book is supposed to be my opinions on the series, I also intend for it to serve as a guide to others. If the people it's intended for don't like it, then it's pointless. So criticisms are welcome. The only things I wouldn't change are my ratings.
I have a very specific format for each chapter and I wrote an entirely separate chapter dedicated to breaking down this format. So technically, you're getting two sneak peeks since I'd like to provide you with a guide to my format. It sounds boring but it explains what each section means and provides insight into why I made the decisions I did. It's very complex and I've reworked it several times. I'm still reworking it actually, I kind of want to add separate parts for commentary on the acting and editing of each series. I might even add a spoiler-free summary section and a summary section with spoilers. Not sure if I will, but I'm thinking about it. Even if I don't decide to make those sections, I do discuss these things in the 'notes' section of each chapter.
As for the Slender series I'll be showing you guys my critique of, I chose one that's a standalone. It's called OneHundredYardStare. Many series are connected and require prior understanding of a different series to fully grasp- that's not the case for this one though. I wanted my sneak peek chapter to be something accessible to all, even those who've never seen a Slender series in their life. Hope you like it. (: But first, the format!!
SNEAK PEEK: Formatting explanation
Additional series: I classify an additional series as something like totheark is to Marble Hornets. It wouldn't exist without MH because it was made by the same creators as a direct tie-in to MH. This is different from a connection/mention because it was made for the sole purpose of tying into the original series. I include links to these along with links to the original series they're a part of, and I do talk about them in the same chapter. If an additional series is mentioned but you cannot find a link to it, that's likely because the link I provided was a playlist which consisted of both the original series and all additional series. If this section is missing on a chapter, that means the series has no additional series. Duh.
Connections/mentions: A different series mentioned by the series in question, which it may or may not be canonly linked to depending on the other creator's wishes. For example, many series make mention of Marble Hornets even though MH is a standalone that is not canonly connected to any other series. This has been stated by the creators. (Well ok technically the creators of MH did make Clear Lakes 44 and eckvanet to be part of the same universe, but those were abandoned and are considered non-canon. I still cover them in my book, though.)
To sum it up: If you see a series in this section, it may not be canonly connected to the series being discussed. I just like to make note of what exists in the canon of the series the chapter is about, even if it's not canon to the series they mention.
Rating: /10. I don't think this one needs any explaining.
Do I recommend: Once again, don't think this one needs explaining.
Slenderman portrayal: I like to note the differences and similarities in how each series portrays Slenderman. Does he have tentacles? Does he put organs in bags suspended from trees? Does he kill or stand idly by as others kill? You get it.
Notes: General summary, plot points I like or dislike, acting commentary, dialogue commentary, etc. Basically just a dissection of the different components of the story. Obviously, this section will contain huge spoilers. I do try to leave things out though, just to encourage you to watch on your own without having everything spoiled. I'm not gonna tell you every little thing that happens. It's best to think of this section like a restaurant menu. I'm the waiter explaining what comes with the food you want and telling you whether I recommend it or not. If you want to order the food after my description, great! If not, order something else. There's plenty of options to choose from, that's for sure. I'm gonna keep going with the restaurant analogy for a moment because I like it okay. LET ME COOK. Having me explain the menu to you is not a replacement for actually eating the food. Maybe you can imagine what it's like based on my description, and maybe you know it comes with this or that in it, but it'll still be just as enjoyable when you actually order it. At least I hope so!
