5: Whoa
Nathan’s POV
“What did your dad mean when he said ‘some other creature’?” I ask as I get out of her truck. Her eyes widen but they return to normal. “Scarlet?”
“Huh?” She looks at me dumb.
“What did your dad mean when he said ‘You didn’t bring some other creature in, did you’?” I said again, slowly so she could understand.
Scarlet sighs. “We don’t—we don’t…” She hesitates. “We can’t let strangers in our house.” Her shoulders droop and she looks at me.
I didn’t know what to say. Well… except… “Why not?”
She shrugs. “It messes up his senses…”
“It what?” I say, bewildered.
She sighs and I could see her breath in the cold air. “I can’t explain. His senses just mess up, okay?” I let the subject drop and walk her into the school. “Thanks,” she muttered when I open the door. What’s up with her? I walk her to her locker, and she didn’t seem to mind. Actually, I didn’t even know if she knew I was there… I thought she was ignoring me, well, until she once again muttered, “You better get ready for class,” she says, avoiding my eyes.
Since I was her locker neighbor, it didn’t take me long to open it and get ready. I was finished before her, too. She seemed hesitant to close her locker though, which was quite sad if you ask me. Her mind seemed like it was somewhere else.
I walk next to her to Ms. Cherri’s class, but she just looked at her feet. I began to stomp, but she kept ignoring. I snapped my fingers in front of her. Well, that didn’t work either. Finally, I made my last attempt to get her attention, which will probably get me killed. I slowly put my arm around her, and then my hand grips her waist lightly. She felt… hot—not that way—but like, she was overheated. But that wasn’t the weird thing.
The weird thing was that she didn’t kill me at all. She still ignored me. People in the halls were whispering stuff like: ‘I thought they hated each other’ and ‘oh my god, I knew it’. It got quite annoying. Finally, I give her a big squeeze and she looks up at me, surprise of how close I was to her.
“What the—,” she began to yell.
But I covered her mouth with my other hand. “What are you thinking about that’s so deep? I made every single attempt to get your attention and you continue to ignore me?” I looked straight into her eyes. “Scarlet, what’s going on? You’ve been somewhere else since your dad came into the kitchen. We didn’t do anything wrong.” She relaxes under my grip but it was more of another sigh. “Tell me.” I uncovered her mouth.
“It’s none of your business,” she whispers. Scarlet pushes me away and walks off to class, leaving me in the hall looking like an idiot.
“And why are you late, Mr. Adams?” Ms. Cherri asks.
I made up some lame excuse. “I was helping a girl pick up her papers,” I lied. She nods and continues to hand out some assignment. I walk to my desk and I see Scarlet already scribbling to get the assignment done.
Plopping down in my seat, I began to realize that I kept staring at her. But of course, she doesn’t notice. It wasn’t like the first day I was here, where she was being a bitch and all that. Come to think of it, I guess April was right. She was pretty cool to hang out with.
