The morning sun, a fiery eye in the pale sky, cast long, skeletal shadows across the courtyard of Xanadu. Within the opulent chambers, a heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by the clinking of porcelain cups against saucers. Azula, her face pale and drawn, sipped her tea, the bitter taste doing little to soothe the turmoil within her.
Rokkun, his brow furrowed in concern, watched her. He reached across the table, his hand hovering over hers, but hesitated. Azula, ever the stoic, rarely showed vulnerability, and he feared intruding on her grief.
"We will find them, my love," he finally said, his voice low and soothing. "I promise you."
Azula scoffed, the sound brittle and harsh. "Your promises ring hollow, Rokkun. You promised to protect our sons. You promised they would be safe."
Rokkun flinched. He had failed. His duty, his sacred oath as a father, had been to protect his family, and he had utterly failed.
"King Xuo was a traitor. He needed to suffer for his crimes." He said flatly.
"He was our only lead!" Azula erupted, her voice rising. "If you had kept him alive, perhaps, just perhaps, we could have learned where he took them. Now, he's dead, by your hand, and with him, any hope of finding our sons."
Rokkun felt a surge of anger, but he quickly suppressed it. Azula was grieving, lashing out in pain. He had to be strong for her, for both of them.
"We will find another way," he said, his voice steady despite the tremor within. "We will not give up. I will dedicate every resource of the Nomads to this search. We will scour every corner of the world until we find them."
Azula looked at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of anger, fear, and a flicker of hope.
"You better." she said, her voice low and dangerous.
Rokkun nodded, his gaze unwavering. He would find them. He had to. For Azula, for himself, and most importantly, for his sons. The weight of their disappearance pressed down on him, heavy and suffocating. But he would not succumb to despair. He would find a way. He had to.
"King Xuo did not act alone," Rokkun stated, after a short pause.
Azula raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "You suspect a traitor, husband?"
Rokkun nodded slowly. "The night of the feast...how is it that those Earth Kingdom peasants knew exactly where and when to attack? Someone had to have helped them from the inside."
Rokkun thought about it for a moment. "Taijuk was conveniently missing the night of the feast...and just days before our boys went missing, Oghuz had told me he had seen Taijuk leaving the camp with great haste."
"Taijuk?" Azula scoffed. "That sniveling boy is nothing but a miserable drunk. He's a coward, Rokkun. He wouldn't dare."
"You have not known him as long as I have," Rokkun said, his voice hardening. "Taijuk is incredibly cunning and ambitious. He is much smarter than he appears."
Azula shuddered, the thought of Taijuk having any involvement in her son's disappearance chilling her to the bone. "What are you suggesting, Rokkun? That Taijuk somehow...betrayed us?"
"I don't know, Azula," Rokkun admitted, his voice heavy with suspicion. "But I intend to find out. I will have Taijuk brought before me immediately."
Azula watched him, a flicker of concern in her eyes. "Be careful, Rokkun. Don't let your anger cloud your judgment."
Rokkun nodded, his gaze fixed on the swirling patterns in his tea. "I won't. But if Taijuk is involved...he will pay dearly."
The air in the room grew heavy with tension. Azula knew that Rokkun, when driven by anger and suspicion, could be a terrifying force. She feared for Taijuk, but more importantly, she feared what uncovering the truth might reveal about their inner circle, about the cracks that had begun to appear in the seemingly impenetrable facade of the Fire Nomads.
The search for their sons had just taken a dangerous turn.
