The hidden passage beneath Xanadu's stone walls was a claustrophobic maze, its air thick with the musty scent of damp earth and ancient dust. Toph led the way, her bare feet gliding over the uneven floor, sensing every crack and crevice with her seismic sense.
Aang followed close behind, his staff's faint glow casting eerie shadows on the rough-hewn walls, while Katara, Sokka, and Suki moved cautiously, their steps muffled to avoid alerting the Nomad guards above. The weight of their discovery—the Dai Li's cache of maps and coded messages—hung heavy, each of them acutely aware that one wrong move could shatter Rokkun's fragile truce.
"This place gives me the creeps," Sokka whispered, gripping his boomerang, his eyes darting to the shadows. "Feels like we're walking into a Dai Li trap."
"Quit whining," Toph hissed, her voice low but sharp. "The stone's telling me there's a chamber up ahead—small, hidden, with something metal in it. Probably where Taijuk stashed his dirty secrets."
Katara's fingers brushed her water pouch, her expression tense. "If Taijuk's working with the Dai Li, he's not just a traitor—he's dangerous. We need hard proof to convince Rokkun, or he'll think we're stirring trouble."
Suki nodded, her fan at the ready. "Rokkun's already paranoid. If we don't have something solid, he'll turn on us faster than a komodo-rhino."
Aang's grey eyes flickered with determination. "Then let's find it. The Dai Li don't leave loose ends. Whatever's in that chamber, it's our best shot at figuring out their plan—and saving this truce."
Toph stopped abruptly, her hand pressed against the wall. "Here," she said, stomping lightly. The stone groaned, revealing a narrow alcove sealed by a slab. With a flick of her wrist, she bent the slab aside, exposing a cramped chamber lit by a single, flickering oil lamp. Inside, a wooden crate sat against the wall, its lid marked with the Dai Li's jade seal—a coiled earth serpent.
Sokka whistled low. "Jackpot. Let's see what Taijuk's been hiding."
Katara carefully pried open the crate, revealing a trove of documents: coded scrolls, a small ledger, and a metal pendant engraved with the Nomad's flame insignia, its edges tarnished as if handled often. Aang unrolled one scroll, his brow furrowing as he deciphered the Dai Li's cryptic script.
"It's a correspondence," he said, his voice tight. "Between Taijuk and someone named 'Captain Xohar.' It details Xanadu's defenses—guard shifts, weak points, even the Khan's daily routine. Look, here's a mention of Sozin and Viszla's kidnapping:
'The heirs are secured. Leverage confirmed. Meet at the swamp for payment."
Katara's eyes widened, her hand trembling as she held the ledger. "This is Taijuk's handwriting," she said, pointing to a list of payments—gold, weapons, and Earth Kingdom supplies. "He's been selling secrets to the Dai Li for months. He gave them everything they needed to pull off the raid."
Suki's jaw clenched, her fan snapping open. "That's why the Earthbenders knew exactly where to strike. Taijuk didn't just betray Rokkun—he sold out his own people, his own princes."
Toph's fists curled, the ground trembling slightly under her feet. "That slime deserves whatever Rokkun's got planned for him. But we need to move fast—these tunnels could have more surprises."
Sokka, flipping through the ledger, froze. "Wait, look at this." He held up a folded note tucked inside, its wax seal broken but bearing the Dai Li's mark. "It's a directive to Taijuk, dated two days ago. 'Neutralize the Khan before the Fire Lord's envoy returns. Ensure chaos.' They're planning to assassinate Rokkun."
Aang's heart sank, the weight of the revelation pressing down. "We have to warn Rokkun and Azula—now. If the Dai Li succeed, Xanadu falls, and the Fire Nomads and Earth Kingdom will be at war again."
The group hurried back through the passage, Toph sealing the alcove behind them to cover their tracks. They emerged into the courtyard, where the Nomad guards snapped to attention, their flames flickering at their fingertips. Oghuz, still overseeing drills, spotted them and strode over, his axe glinting ominously.
"What are you doing skulking around?" he growled, his scarred face darkening. "I told you to stay put."
Aang stepped forward, clutching the incriminating scroll. "We found proof—Taijuk's working with the Dai Li. He's behind the kidnapping and more. We need to see Rokkun and Azula immediately."
Oghuz's eyes narrowed, suspicion warring with curiosity. He snatched the scroll, scanning it briefly before his expression hardened. "If this is a trick, Avatar, you'll regret it. Follow me."
The Gaang was escorted through Xanadu's bustling streets, the air thick with tension as whispers of the Dai Li's involvement spread among the guards. They reached the Khan's tent, its crimson fabric billowing in the breeze, dragon motifs glinting in the sunlight. Inside, Rokkun stood over a map-strewn table, his copper hair disheveled, his amber eyes bloodshot from sleepless nights. Azula sat nearby, her golden eyes sharp but shadowed with grief.
Zuko stood opposite Rokkun, his posture tense The air crackled with their unresolved rivalry, but the Gaang's arrival silenced their heated exchange.
"What is this?" Rokkun demanded, his voice a low growl, his usual swagger muted by exhaustion. "Oghuz, why are they here?"
Oghuz bowed, holding out the scroll. "They claim to have evidence against Taijuk, my Lord. Dai Li involvement."
Azula's eyes snapped to Aang, her expression unreadable. "Speak, Avatar," she said, her voice cold and precise. "What have you found?"
Aang took a deep breath, presenting the scroll and ledger. "Taijuk's been working with the Dai Li. He gave them Xanadu's secrets—guard schedules, weak points, even your sons' location. This ledger shows payments he received, and this note orders him to assassinate you, Rokkun, before Zuko returns. The Dai Li want to destabilize the Nomads and spark a war."
Rokkun's face darkened, his fists clenching, crumpling the map beneath his hands. "Taijuk," he spat, his voice trembling with fury. "That dog betrayed my sons—my family—for Earth Kingdom gold?"
Azula stood, her movements fluid but predatory. "If this is true," she said, her voice low and dangerous, "Taijuk's life is forfeit. But how do we know you're not spinning lies to save your own skins?"
Zuko stepped forward, his voice firm despite the tension. "Azula, we've seen the Dai Li's work before. This is their handiwork—coded messages, precise plans. They're playing Taijuk to tear you apart from within."
Sokka, unable to resist, added, "Yeah, and Taijuk's not exactly a mastermind. He's the perfect pawn—greedy, disloyal, and dumb enough to think he'd get away with it."
Rokkun's gaze flicked to Sokka, a flicker of his sardonic grin returning. "Careful, peasant. You're not wrong, but I don't need your lip." He turned to Azula, his expression softening slightly. "What do you think, my love? Is this their game, or the Dai Li's?"
Azula studied the ledger, her fingers tracing Taijuk's handwriting. Her eyes flickered with something—betrayal, perhaps, or the pain of another wound to her family. "The evidence is damning," she said finally, her voice icy. "Taijuk will answer for this. But we must act swiftly—the Dai Li won't wait."
Rokkun nodded, his grin replaced by a steely resolve. "Oghuz, double the patrols. Seal the fortress. No one leaves until we find Taijuk—or his corpse." He turned to Aang, his eyes searching. "You've earned a shred of trust, Avatar. Help us hunt this traitor, and we'll see about your peace talks."
Aang nodded, gripping his staff. "We'll help. But we need to stop the Dai Li's plan before it's too late—for all our sakes."
As the group dispersed to prepare, Katara whispered to Aang, "This doesn't feel right. The Dai Li are too clever to leave evidence this obvious. What if Taijuk's just the bait? Something bigger is at play here."
Aang's expression darkened, the weight of her words sinking in. The tent's shadows seemed to deepen, hiding secrets yet to be uncovered, as Xanadu braced for a reckoning.
