Chapter 18

Meruem's POV

"Argh, this is impossible! Why is it so hard to beat you?!" I watched as Y/n clutched her head as she lost the game again.

Seeing her smile gives warmth inside me and being beside her is where I belong. It's like I never want her to leave my sight, otherwise I would go crazy. Crazy? Did I really think of that? How unbecoming of me.

It's been a week ever since we started playing chess and it became our daily routine. At first, I found it ridiculous that I would be playing this game every day, but after a while, I've looked forward to our game every day.

I learnt that if you love someone, you're supposed to tell them, but I haven't really told Y/n yet. I love her, but it's not my place to tell her. Although it's becoming more and more harder to hold back my feelings.

"Let's play again!" Y/n demanded, and I always find her cute... cute? 

I find her amusing when she shows me different sides of her. Every part of me wants to know everything about her. I didn't even know that a King like me is capable of loving someone, but it just happened.

"You will lose again." I told her in nonchalant voice even though I'm... happy on the inside.

"This time I will win!" While Y/n was fixing the chess pieces, an earthquake happened and caused all the pieces to fall on the ground. "Don't worry, I'll pick them up!"

All of the sudden, Y/n tripped over her own feet and fell forward. My body just moved on its own and caught her before she hit the ground. She looked up into my eyes, my heart pounding and my breath hitched.

My eyes trailed on her pink lips, and it seemed to be hypnotizing me. I remembered the time when she first kissed me, that was the time when I first felt... warmth. This stupid, annoying girl unknowingly captured the King's heart, and she doesn't even realize it.

I couldn't control myself any longer, I closed the gap between us and my body went crazy as soon as my lips touched her. After that, we both kissed passionately, and I wished that the time would stop.

Wish? Did I really wish for that? I used to be the King who would take what he wants which was to conquer the world. Now, I just want to be with the person I love, away from any danger lurking around the corner.

Yes, a King like me wished to be with Y/n forever. I love her so much to the point that I will do anything to protect her. I want her to be my Queen, and we can continue with our life like this.

As if the universe doesn't want to grant me that wish, we were soon interrupted when we felt the cat's En disappeared.  Y/n immediately sat up and looked outside the window.

"We're under attack!" She shouted and before I can process what she said, she covered me with her water barrier and an explosion happened.

I watched as the building collapsed and fell on Y/n. I smashed the barrier, but it only created a ripple. Y/n gave me a reassuring smile before she was crushed. I felt as if my whole world came crashing down as her blood splashed around the room.

This only happened because she used the water from her body to protect me. I said I was going to protect her, me, protect her! I am the most powerful Chimeras, I am the King yet I couldn't even protect the person I love!

After the building calmed down, the water barrier fell on the ground, as if she made sure I was really safe. I removed the rocks that fell on her and I didn't even realized it, but tears were streaming from my eyes.

Huh...? I'm... crying?

I gently carried Y/n's body and put her on the ground where there wasn't any rocks or dirt. At the same time, Pitou arrived, which relieved me a little bit as I know her Nen can heal Y/n.

"Heal her." I demanded as I walked past Pitou, who somehow had tears in her eyes.

I couldn't stay here any longer as I know what the enemy wants, me. To keep Y/n safe and for them to not interrupt the healing, I had to leave her behind.

I promise to come back after everything is over

How foolish of me, keeping a promise that might not happen. I may be the most powerful Chimera being, but humans showed great promises too. I might not even make it back alive but for Y/n, I will fight till my last breath.
