Kenji adjusted his school bag as he stepped into U.A., taking in the familiar hustle of students rushing through the halls. It had been a few weeks since he moved back in with his dad, and though things weren’t perfect, they were improving. There were still moments of awkward silence and lingering guilt between them, but Shoto was making an effort and for the first time in a long time, so was Kenji.

His daily life had settled into a rhythm: wake up early, train, attend classes, and hang out with his friends. He was still determined to become the number one hero, and that meant no distractions. Well, almost no distractions.

“Oi, Kenji!”

Kenji turned just in time for Ren to throw an arm around his shoulders, grinning. Ren was as energetic as ever, his short, messy blue hair sticking out at odd angles. “You actually got here on time today? Who are you and what have you done with Kenji Todoroki?”

Kenji rolled his eyes. “Ha ha, very funny.”

Felix, walking beside them, smirked. “Ren has a point, though. You used to show up half-asleep, barely making it to first period.”

Shiro, who had been quietly listening, chuckled.

Kenji nodded. “ Got to stay sharp.”

Kai, walking slightly behind the group, arched an eyebrow. “So focused that you don’t even have time to say hi to me anymore?”

Kenji blinked, realizing he hadn’t properly greeted Kai this morning. “Oh- hey. I didn't see you.”

Kai smirked, crossing his arms. “Mm-hmm.”

Ren snickered. “Kenji’s got tunnel vision. We’ll have to drag him out for a break one of these days.”

Kenji sighed but didn’t argue. Truthfully, he hadn’t been spending much time outside of training and school. He was grateful for his friends, even if they were determined to keep him from overworking himself.

Class and Training

Classes at U.A. were as intense as ever. Aizawa had been particularly tough on them lately, pushing their combat and strategic thinking skills to the limit.

During training that afternoon, they were paired up for sparring exercises. Kenji ended up facing Kai, which wasn’t uncommon, but it always made things... interesting.

Kai grinned as he cracked his knuckles. “Think you can keep up, explosion boy?”

Kenji smirked. “I should be asking you that.”

The fight started fast—Kai was quick, using his blood manipulation to create sharp, whip-like strikes. Kenji dodged and countered with explosive footwork, closing the distance between them. Sparks flew as he aimed a precise blast, forcing Kai to jump back.

Their fights always felt like a dance, back and forth, neither willing to give in. It was part of why they worked so well together, why they understood each other.

After Aizawa called an end to the match, Kenji dropped onto the training mat, catching his breath. Kai sat down beside him, wiping sweat from his brow.

“Not bad,” Kai admitted. “You’ve definitely improved.”

Kenji smirked. “So have you.”

Their gazes locked for a moment. Before either could say anything else, Ren dropped down next to them, grinning.

“Damn, watching you two fight is exhausting.”

Felix nodded in agreement. “It’s like watching a battle between two stubborn idiots.”

Shiro, standing nearby, shrugged. “At least it’s entertaining.”

Kenji rolled his eyes but didn’t say anything. Kai nudged his shoulder slightly before getting up, offering him a hand. Kenji hesitated for a second before taking it.

That evening, Kenji walked through the door of his house, greeted by the smell of cooking. He was surprised to see Shoto in the kitchen, setting food on the table.

“I made dinner,” Shoto said simply.

Kenji raised an eyebrow. “You cook now?”

Shoto gave a small smile. “Trying.”

They sat down at the table, eating in comfortable silence. Eventually, Shoto cleared his throat.

“How was school?”

Kenji shrugged. “Same as always. Training was rough.”

Shoto nodded. “I watched your sparring match today.”

Kenji froze. “Wait, what?”

Shoto took a sip of tea. “Aizawa sent me the footage.”

Kenji groaned. “Of course he did.”

Shoto’s expression softened. “You’re doing well, Kenji. I can see how hard you’re working.”

Kenji didn’t know how to respond to that, so he just nodded. Camouflaging his happiness.

“You know,” Shoto said, looking at him carefully. “I’m proud of you.”

Kenji blinked, caught off guard. He had spent so much time being angry, being distant but hearing that now, it meant more than he expected.

“…Thanks, Dad.”

After he ate kenji went to his room to study, leaving shoto behind.

shoto realising that he was so focused on his son that he hadn't touched his food yet,he picks up his chopsticks ready to dig in putting a bite in his mouth only to spit it out immediately.

He was not built for the kitchen,
He looked over at Kenji's plate.

It was empty.
