Being nearly twenty, I've had to wait for a lot of things during my lifetime. Things I looked forward to, things I've dreaded, and things I needed. But even if you combined all the times I've had to wait, it still wouldn't compare to how horrible this time feels. And I like to consider myself a patient man. But fuck! This is testing all my limits.
A week and four days. That's how long it's been since I've seen Wes. He was right about his mom grounding him for the shit that went down with his grandma. It fucking sucks. I mean, he's an adult. I get he still lives at home, so it's their house, their rules, but it's not fair. He didn't even do anything wrong. Defending homosexuals is a pretty admirable thing to do, not something he should be punished for.
I just want to see him. Even if we talk over the phone throughout the day, it's not enough. I miss him so much.
And to make matters worse, tomorrow is Valentine's Day. It's on a Thursday, so he most likely won't be able to be with me for it. I might be able to survive it if I got to see him at least once this weekend. It won't be the same, but it'll satisfy me. I wanted to get him a gift, too, but I'm not even sure if he's into the holiday. And to be fair, we've only been dating a few weeks. He might think it's too soon. I don't, but I'd rather not make him feel awkward or forced to take it.
I pull my phone out and open out messages to see about my hopeful plans.
'Do you think you could do something this weekend? I miss you.' I add in a few of the sad, crying emojis before sending it.
He instantly reads it and starts typing. 'I just got ungrounded.'
Excitement fills me to the core. 'Really? Then could we do something tomorrow?'
'Why tomorrow?' Does he not know it's Valentine's Day? Or is he just messing with me?
'Well, for one, I miss you so the sooner, the better. And two, I want you to be my valentine.'
He reads it, but he's taking longer to reply this time. So my thumb moves to the phone icon before I can stop it. It rings twice before he answers.
"Will you?" I ask before he says anything. "Be my valentine?"
"Yeah," comes softly from him and without hesitation, making both my smile and surprise grow.
"Oh. I didn't expect you to answer so bluntly."
"Well, it should be obvious, but yes, I'll be your valentine."
"Perfect. Does that mean I can take you out tomorrow?" He falls silent, and the longer it lasts the more nervous it makes me. Right. He probably thinks the idea of us hanging out on Valentine's would look suspicious to people. "I get it if you don't want to go out, but could we at least hang out here?"
"I... I don't know. It'll look weird us wanting to hang out on Valentine's Day, won't it?"
"It doesn't have to be. Friends can still hang out on Valentine's Day. But if it'll help, you can lie and say you're going out with a girl..." I trail off, a small pit forming in my stomach at the idea. But if it gets him here, I don't really care that much.
"No, uh, you're right. It'll be fine. I'll just tell her I'm hanging out with you. I already told her I didn't have a date. Oh, and I have something I want to tell you tomorrow."
My lips turn down at that. "You know the suspense is going to kill me, right?
"You can handle it."
I let a groan out at the sassy remark. "Fine." I still want to know what he wants to do, though. "Uh, so did you want to go out tomorrow? I thought we could finally go play laser tag this time. What do you say?"
