Ev POV

"Hello, Mr. O'brian!" Sophie chirped from her desk in front of my office.

"Hi Sophie. And please, you can just call me Green." I explained to her for the hundredth time. Sophie was my secretary. Well, she was my fifth secretary. In the last five years, I had gone through five secretaries, the previous lasting only six months. Sophie was a brunette with blonde highlights. That day, she was wearing light blue dress pants with a matching sweater and some type of heels that looked way too tall for anyone to walk in.

"Well Green, you have a meeting with Tony at 10, another meeting with your team at 3, and I booked your reservation at The Oceaneitte for 8:30 tonight." Sophie recited while walking into my office with me.

"Thank you, Sophie." I said as I sat down. I thought she would leave but Sophie seemed to have other plans.

"Your girlfriend is going to be ecstatic when you take her to the Oceaneitte. I heard it has the best seafood in all of New York," Sophie told me still standing and seeming to stock closer.

"I don't have a girlfriend," I replied distractedly as I opened my computer and looked at the morning's numbers.

"Oh... that's interesting!" She whispered almost to herself.

"And why is that?" I challenged her, looking up from my screen.

"It's just, you would think girls would be chasing you down. You're handsome, successful and a pretty great boss. You're the full package," Sophie said in a tone that was supposed to be suggestive but fell flat on its face.

"I don't go around looking for anyone." I stated firmly, hoping she would get the message. She simply smiled and turned to walk back to her desk. She put her hand on the door handle but turned back to me to say something else.

"We should go out sometime outside of the office," she added and left before letting me respond.

Well shit.

That was all I could think after Sophie left. She couldn't get the hint that I wasn't looking for relationships because I was in a relationship. I didn't go around boasting about the fact that I was gay, but it wasn't a secret that I didn't date. Still, the only way you would know is if I told you and the only people I told was Kruz and my immediate team members, which is only twelve people. How was I going to tell Sophie it was never going to happen? Or maybe I didn't have to. Maybe I could keep her feelings from being hurt by never bringing it up again. Normally I wouldn't care, but Sophie was pretty young and actually really nice. I was probably the first adult crush she had, and I remembered my first adult crush. Let's just say my feelings were not reciprocated and I was told that in the most humiliating way possible.

So, I decided that I wasn't going to bring it up until Sophie came into my office around noon. She was just telling me that she was going to lunch, but I couldn't stand to see the hopeful look in her eyes that we might actually become something one day.

"Sophie," I began, "About what you said earlier,"

"Yes?" Sophie asked hopefully.

"We probably won't be seeing each other outside of work. At least not in that way," I tried to disclose kindly. Sophie's face slowly fell and then scrunched in confusion. A quiet chime sounded in my pocket. I turned my phone to silent without even checking who it was.

"I thought you said you didn't have a girlfriend?" She questioned.

"I don't," I repeated and felt another buzz in my pocket.

"But why can we never meet in an unprofessional setting?" Sophie inquired again.

"Because we can't." I sighed and glanced at my computer. Maybe this was a bad idea after all.
