I wanted to believe it was. I wanted to believe that no matter how difficult things got, we could make it work.
But I wasn't sure anymore.
Tears streamed down my face as I whispered, "I just don't know if I can do this."
His expression shattered. "Chloe, please. Don't give up on us."
I closed my eyes, feeling my chest tighten painfully.
This was the hardest decision I had ever made.
I took a deep breath, forcing the words out. "Let's break up. No more contact."
Silence.
Heeseung stared at me, his face pale, his eyes filled with devastation.
"What?" His voice cracked. "Chloe... you don't mean that, right?" His gaze was desperate, pleading. "Hey... you don't mean that. You can't."
I forced myself to look at him, even though my vision was blurred by tears. "It's for the best, Heeseung. Believe me. For you, for Enhypen—"
His voice was suddenly sharp, his emotions spilling over. "No, you don't get to decide what's best for me."
I flinched at the raw pain in his tone.
"You think my life will be better without you?" His voice rose, his breathing uneven. "Are you crazy? Do you even hear yourself right now?"
I clenched my fists, trying to hold myself together. "Heeseung, please—"
"No, please nothing, Chloe," he interrupted, shaking his head. His hands were gripping his phone so tightly his knuckles turned white. "You think I can just go back to my life like nothing happened? Like you never existed?"
His voice was breaking, full of frustration and desperation. "I need you, Chloe."
I squeezed my eyes shut, tears falling freely now. This is for him. This is for his future.
"I'm doing this because I love you," I whispered.
"No. If you loved me, you wouldn't do this," he shot back immediately, his voice cracking on the last word.
Heeseung ran a shaky hand through his hair, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "I don't want to lose you."
I heard a sudden knock on Heeseung's door, followed by the sound of it opening.
He turned his head slightly, startled.
"Heeseung...?" A familiar voice spoke up.
It was Jay.
Heeseung didn't respond. He was frozen in place, his face a mixture of heartbreak and disbelief.
Jay stepped closer, his brows furrowed in concern. "Heeseung... what's wrong? Who are you talking to?"
I took one last shaky breath.
"I love you, Heeseung. That's why I have to do this." My voice was trembling. "I wish you and the others all the success in the world."
His eyes widened in panic. "Chloe, don't do this—"
I ended the call.
The second the screen went black, my strength shattered.
Sobs wracked my body as I clutched the phone to my chest. I had done it. I had broken up with Heeseung.
I had let him go.
I could still hear his voice echoing in my head, the way he had begged me to stay, the way his voice broke when he said he needed me.
But I knew, deep down, that this was the right decision. Heeseung had worked so hard for his dream. I couldn't let our love become the reason his career suffered. I would always support him, but now... from afar.
Days passed. Then weeks.
I tried my best to move on, but every time I saw Enhypen perform, my heart ached. I watched their interviews, their performances, their content—searching for any sign of the boy I loved.
But Heeseung was different. Quieter. His smile wasn't as bright, his energy not as strong as before. He was trying to act normal, trying to move forward.
But I could tell.
He was hurting. Just like me.
I wiped away a tear as I watched a new interview of him. He was smiling, answering questions with the same charm as always. But there was something missing in his eyes.
I wondered if he thought of me too. If he replayed our last conversation in his head, the way I did every night.
This is for the best, I reminded myself. For him. For Enhypen.
It's our fate...
