The whole town had known the [Last] family as the kindest families. They had been a family of high wealth. The father, [Father], had been a merchant who sold goods. His wife had been the daughter of a poor shoe maker.

Though, marrying a man with wealth while one had been poor was considered a gold digger. [Mother] had fallen in love with [Father] when he saved her from the rain. Their relationship had gotten them in quite the trouble, but despite that they had never once let anything get in their way.

Even to the point of [Mother] bearing [Father]'s child never got in their way. This act had caused many men and women, wealthy and poor, to set aside their titles and experiment on the opposite end. It ended up to a positive reaction.

The whole town had been turned upside down. All thanks to the [Last]. The dramatics had been set aside and their first child, [First] had been grown up. Being raised by parents who had undergone through years of discrimination, she was taught certain to look through others perspectives and how they were seeing things.

"Always keep an open mind."

"No matter how cruel, how vile, or how terrible a person is to you, never let your negativity get the best of you, [First]. It will only make things worse."

Oh, how tempted [First] had been whenever someone had thrown an insult at her. Only a hinting insult would suffice. Most of the time the one who threw the insult had been quite confused, considering how much hot air had been filling their head.

This caused slight problems with certain families, but not to many. [First] was a perfectly oriented child who knew her boundaries, unlike most children at her age. During parties, she had not been much of a social butterfly, wanting to be engulfed in her books, than making an attempt to have a conversation with other children.

They, to other people's eyes, seemed to be the perfect family. Like nothing was going to split them apart. That's what [First] had thought this also. But, good things must come to end, as most people say.

It was an illness. It had spread across the country. The whole [Last] manor had been struck by the illness. The maids, the chefs, even the dog. Soon the illness had began within the family itself. First, it had been [Father]. It was as brutal as the others. Heavy coughing and wheezing was just a small matter.

Then it came to [First]. Her matter had been similar her father's case, but blood had been involved. Weeks of staying in a stuffy room had not been very safe for an eleven year old. It took months for [First] to be healthy once more, but it paid a price. Her mother had been in and out of the room more times than [First] could count.

No matter how many warnings, how many times [First] had said she was fine, [Mother] had ignored them. Tending to her daughter was more important than her own health.

And soon, she had caught the sickness. Doctors visited the minute [Mother] coughed up blood. Of course, being the hopeful daughter she was, [First] prayed that her mother were to be healthy and alive in a few months, just like her and her father. Sadly, it had not been answered.

Her mother's lungs had already been collapsing, the airway in her throat was closing up, also. She hadn't bothered to tell anyone, I'm fear she might burden her husband to add into the chain of illness. The doctors, all five of them, had agreed that it was already too late [Mother] to survive and she must take her last few months slowly.

It had devastated everyone, even the town. They knew [Mother] [Last] fairly well, since most of the civilians grew up with her. Always helping her father before he passed, never once thought of a noble in a fowl way. She was likable. And even if her daughter was cooped up and shy, she turned out to be exactly like her mother.

It devastates [First] even more to learn she won't be able to see her mother. It caused her so much disress to the point she won't even eat anymore. She couldn't bear the thought of her mother's death coming nearer and nearer. And when it came, [Mother]'s last request had been to speak to her daughter once more.

"[First]. Come here, darling." She smiled weakly when she saw her daughter. With each step [First] took, the more tears seemed to keep falling. Once she was there, she took hold of her mother's outstretched hand, lacing the fingers tightly.

"Now, I want you to remember all the lessons I gave you. No matter how disregarding, how torturous, how inhuman a person will be towards you, treat them with ten times as much kindness and sincerity. Whatever snappy comment you have to say will need to be swallowed down, deary. They'll need your kindness the most." [First] nodded, tears beginning to slip one after another. [Mother] smiled. "No more crying. Now, I want to see your big smiling face before I leave Earth. C'mon, big smile."

With quivering lips, [First] moved her mouth upward, her teeth showing up finally.

"There it is." Were the last words ever spoken from her mother.

Years had passed, though. [First] was on the verge of turning seventeen and her father's business was beginning to plummet. [Father] began to be gone for more than three days - he always came home three days or less - since most of his customers are from a different town.

He always comes home, though. Most widowed men in her time usually leave their child to the care of a much "better" family. [First] hopes it doesn't end up that way. Though, she did not like to reminisce in the past, she always thought of the good days when her father would bring back little trinkets from his expeditions.

Time to time, he does bring back a little something. A small ring from Granger, a city that required many boats and fees to get through for they were called the "Water Traders". Little jars of homey from the well known culinary town of Trailers, only a two day drive from carriage. It wasn't very much planned to buy a little something for [First]. [Father] only used the leftover money after seperating it from the fees and expenses.

But... Today had been an odd day. [Father] didn't have any trading or meets to go to today. It was odd even before her mother had died of the illness. He seemed lively, too. His dear daughter was quite lost in what happened.

So she decided to ask. "Father, are you alright? You've been quite lively this afternoon. Practically skipped your way to breakfast this morning."

[Father] gave out a hearty laugh, causing the few servants they have left to look at him in surprise. It was odd to listen to him laugh, let alone talk. "My dear girl, we've done it!"

[First] tilted her head in confusion. "I don't understand, Father. Whatever do you mean by that?"

"I've fixed our financial situation!"

"And how is that, Father?"

"I've found a bride!"

"WHAT?!"
