The sun was on their heads when Niko and Dabi slipped through the back alleys of the city. Niko's mind raced with a mix of exhaustion and determination. Dabi had insisted on keeping a low profile, but he stayed close enough to intervene if needed.
They reached a small park, the early hour ensuring it was empty. Niko sat on a bench, her phone clenched tightly in her hand. Dabi leaned against a tree a few meters away, his eyes sharp and watchful.
A soft rustle broke the silence, and Tokoyami emerged from the shadows, his red eyes narrowing when he saw Niko's state. His posture stiffened when he noticed Dabi, but he focused on Niko first.
"Niko, what happened?" he asked, his voice a blend of worry and control.
Niko took a deep breath. "It was a trap, Fumi. The call to the southern district—it wasn't real. Someone in the agency set me up."
Tokoyami's feathers ruffled, a sign of his agitation. "Are you sure?"
Dabi stepped forward, his expression unreadable. "She's sure. I was there."
Tokoyami's crimson eyes narrowed, his posture defensive. "And why should I believe you?"
Dabi's lips curled into a smirk, but there was no real amusement in it. "You don't have to. But your little friend here almost got killed because someone at your agency wanted her gone."
Niko placed a hand on Tokoyami's arm, grounding him. "Fumi, he's telling the truth. The attackers knew I'd be there. They were ready for me."
Tokoyami's expression shifted from suspicion to concern. "We need to tell Hawks. If there's a traitor in the agency, he'll want to know."
Dabi straightened, his blue eyes hardening. "I'll stay out of sight, but I'm not leaving her alone. Not until you figure this out."
Tokoyami hesitated, then nodded. "Fine. But if you try anything—"
"I won't." Dabi's tone was flat, leaving no room for argument.

Back at the agency, Hawks paced his office, his golden eyes sharp and focused. When Niko and Tokoyami walked in, his expression shifted from relief to a calculating seriousness.
"Little birdie, are you okay?" His voice was soft, but there was a steel edge beneath it.
Niko nodded, the weight of the past hours pressing down on her. "It was a setup, Aniki. The mission wasn't real. Someone sent me into a trap."
Hawks' expression hardened. "Who?"
"I don't know. But Onii-chan helped me escape." Niko hesitated, watching Hawks' reaction carefully.
His brows lifted slightly, but he didn't seem entirely surprised. "Dabi, huh? And where is he now?"
"Nearby. He won't leave until he knows I'm safe."
Hawks sighed, a mix of frustration and acceptance. "I'll have to deal with that later. Right now, we need to find out who set you up."
He turned to Tokoyami. "Tokoyami, help me pull the records of all communications sent out yesterday. I want to know who authorized that fake mission."
Tokoyami nodded immediately. "Understood."
---
Hours later, after combing through logs and surveillance footage, they found it—a single encrypted message sent from within the agency to the attackers. The sender was one of Hawks' sidekicks, a quiet and unassuming hero named Raptor.
"He's been with you for years," Tokoyami murmured, disbelief evident in his voice.
Hawks' jaw tightened. "Which makes him perfect for a traitor. No one would suspect him."
Niko's hands curled into fists. "Where is he now?"
Hawks pressed a button on his desk, bringing up a live feed from the security cameras. But Raptor's office was empty, his desk cleared out.
"He's gone," Hawks said, a dangerous calm settling over him. "But he won't get far. I'll put out an alert—he won't be able to hide."
Niko's chest tightened. "What if he tries again?"
Hawks walked over to her, his expression softening. "He won't. I won't let him. You'll stay with me until we catch him. Understand?"
Niko nodded, the fear slowly ebbing away with Hawks' reassuring presence.
Tokoyami stepped forward, his expression resolute. "We'll find him. Together."
As they began to formulate a plan, a shadow lingered outside the agency—Dabi, hidden in the alley, his blue eyes never straying from the window where he could just make out Niko's silhouette.
And as the sun began to set, the real hunt began.
