The next morning, I busied myself exploring and discovering exactly where I was.

On the big scale, I was in a manor or a mansion. Very little nobility had a manor or a mansion so Sir Dee must be very wealthy.

On the small scale, I was in a room, larger than my entire old house, which now belonged to me.

Two doors faced me.

The first was an extensive room, which was filled from floor to ceiling with beautiful clothes, so light and beautiful that I was afraid to touch them.

The second opened into a giant hallway that connected my room to the rest of the castle.

I shut the door, breathing hard.

I wasn’t ready to explore the entire castle.

Not yet anyways.

Why would Sir Dee give all this to me, though? The question kept bugging me until a knock at the door distracted me.

I opened the door slowly.

It was a lady dressed in black with a white apron. Apparently, she was supposed to help be get ready for my meeting with Sir Dee’s friend.

I couldn’t keep the anxious frown off my face at the thought of it.

“It’s ok dear,” the old lady said, kindly, “Master Dee will take good care of you but first we have to get you ready.”

She revealed yet another door, which led to a room where there was a giant tub. Servants began to enter, bringing with them large buckets of water.

I was simply delighted.

I could not get into the bathtub fast enough and I almost got everyone wet in the process.

The old lady poured something sweet smelling into the water and began to rub my arms, legs and face with the water.

I was less than pleased when an hour later, they decided that I’d had enough fun and dragged me from the water.

Pouting, I walked back into my room, looking for my clothes.

“Where are my clothes?” I asked the old lady, confused.

“Right here,” she led me to my giant bed where one of the beautiful dresses lay.

“Can I wear that?” I asked nervously.

“Of course you can, my dear,” she laughed at my confusion and helped me put the white silk dress on.

I twirled around the room until the lady could catch me and sat me down on a stool.

She produced a brush from one of my drawers and began to brush my hair.

I looked intently at our reflections in the mirror, admiring the little girl in white that stood up so straight and proud.

I struggled to understand that that little girl was I and that that little girl wouldn’t be little for much longer.

Sir Dee arrived only minutes after the old lady had finished with me and rushed me to a horse-drawn carriage.

The entire ride was spent with my face pressed against the window looking at all the people walking beside me. A couple waved and I couldn’t help but wave back!

The streets were bustling and it took a long time to reach the end of the city. Only then did Sir Dee break the silence.

“How was your morning?”

“It was wonderful but-” the question kept plaguing my mind.

“But what?”

“But why did you pick me?”

Sir Dee frowned, “I’m sorry I don’t understand the question.”

“Why did you pick me to come live in your mansion? There are lots of children that are better than me.”

I remembered my brother and the guilt clouded my previous happiness.

“I’ve done some bad things.”

Dee patted me on the shoulder, “It’s ok Aurelia, and we all have. That’s why I want to help you.”

I nodded and the carriage drew to a halt.

“We’re here.”
