Jack and Y/n were pretty close. Like... shockingly close and comfortable with one another.
Such a bond even before their own existence.
Little Eliza climbed out of her bed one sunny Saturday morning to find a moving truck outside the house next door. Of course, her parents dressed her up and ushered her over to meet the new neighbours, only to be met by another little girl.
"Hi... My Named Eliza... What's yours?"
"My name's Mabel... you wanna see my dollies."
And so began a lifelong friendship, between the two. One so strong they each were maidens of honour for the other's weddings, their husband's best friends, and both remaining in the houses they grew up in side by side.
The faithful day soon arrived almost perfectly, as Both Mable and Eliza fell pregnant.
Spent their days sitting together gossiping away as always, while their babies grew. Often joking that the babies in utero would be kicking when apart but calm together as if comforted by the other.
Eliza was the first to have her baby, a little boy. That she named Jack.
A tiny problematic little boy, who would cry from dawn to dusk if someone so much as brushed air towards him.
And only a few weeks later Mable had her baby, a little girl. Named Y/n.
A very quiet child to her own detriment sometimes, but squirmy to no end, unable to sit still for even a mere moment.
The first time the two were ever put together, the two tiny infants were placed in a crib side by side and within a second of clamping eyes on one another.
Y/n stilled. And Jack silenced.
As if all they had wanted all along was to just be next to one another.
And if ever removed from each other's sights, The screams and squirms would immediately return.
Unsurprisingly, it was at first found adorable by all involved. That the little ones had such a bond already that they couldn't bear to be dragged apart. And it was cute... for the first few months.
But when the two were a year old and still Jack would start screaming and crying like a banshee if Y/n was removed from his presence. Choosing to wrap his arms around her and cling to a death grip that required a literal prybar at some points whenever he noticed his parents preparing to separate them.
"Jack! for the love of god kiddo..." his father begged as he gripped Jack by the ankles and tried to pull him out of Y/n's playhouse,
"Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!! My illy! My illy!" He screamed arms clutched around the plastic door like he was fighting the pull of a disastrous flood.
But over time, their parents simply relented, as it was easier just to let them stay together than trying to separate them. To such an extent the two had to be given the bedrooms with window's facing into each other, so the two could wave goodnight to one another.
"Nye Nye illy!" Jack would wave incessantly screaming out his window,
"Goooood Night..." Y/n waved back,
Teachers very quickly learnt that separating them was a BAD idea if they wanted anything else to happen in their classroom. As Jack's screams and cries could only be ignored for so long before wanting to kick him across a room. And Y/n if quiet ... became... Violent.
"Ahhh! Miss Y/L/N we do not throw things!" The teacher yelled after having an alphabet block hurled at her backside,
Y/n merely narrowed her eyes,
"Just because you can't sit next to Mr Dawkin's does not-" However before she even finished her sentence she got another block hurled at her head,
Many teachers laughed it off and just assumed the two would grow out of it with time, only to be bested by the two and forced to accommodate.
As they grew older, it did lessen if never really disappeared. The two didn't need to be attached at the hip however worked their best when together and if given the choice would always choose to be close together.
The common joke among their friends, that any class without Y/n, Jack immediately fails because he just doesn't even brother to try without her there to encourage him. Which did have some truth, it certainly wasn't all coincidence that the classes Jack didn't excel in happened to be the ones where he wasn't with Y/n. So much so the school did several checks to ensure the two weren't somehow collaborating in a detailed cheating system.
Y/n did fine academically without Jack around, but socially... not so much. She was quiet and often didn't say a word unless prompted by a teacher, not bothering to answer her fellow students no matter how much they would yell in her direction. Which did also mellowed over time.... Slowly.
But it didn't take them both long to find where they wanted to focus their attention, their parents often joking it was one two many games of doctor and Nurse in Y/n's playhouse.
As both choose to go down the medical route.
Both going to the same college, med school, even doing their training and getting jobs at the same place.
They were, briefly apart. As at first, Y/n got a job at a different hospital but within about six months transferred to the same hospital as Jack.
But no matter how many times she's asked it, she always denies it has anything to do with it.
Which only became more and more unbelievable when the two moved in together.
Moving into a small two-bedroom house, walking distance from the surgery, the store and all other such amenities.
Stuck to live for the rest of their lives answering the same question,
"Ohh is this your husband?" The plumber asks,
"Nope. Just my idiot." Y/n shrugs,
"What aren't I!" Jack yelled from his perch on top of the stairwell,
"My husband!" Y/n yells back,
"Ohh... Nope!" Jack yells back, "But if..."
"No!"
"Come on!"
"I said no!"
Pretty much every single person in their lives has various bets on when one of them is going to snap and confess their love for the other.
But the best theory definitely comes from Y/n's friend, Zoe. Who is to this day completely convinced that it'll come so naturally to Jack and Y/n that they will get married and have children with no fanfare, no planning, without telling anyone and before ever admitting to each other or even themselves that they are deeply in love, It'll just happen and neither will ever properly address it.
Which... Jack also secretly believes. Or more... hopes.
