Jack had finished up his rounds for the day, and frankly, he wasn't exactly enthusiastic about running back to the hospital knowing the mess Sneed had no doubt left for him to clean up. So instead he walked the Port Victory market, gazing over produce, antiques and other such items, chatting with those he came across along the way. Honestly, he was kinda hoping he could sneak his way across town to the Cat and Bagpipies for a quick ale before getting spotted.
He did his best not to look at the town square, where more criminals were being hanged on Captain Gain's orders, most of these men and women having caused such minor offences that it seemed foolish to take their lives. But he didn't dare voice such thoughts, knowing his own history would no doubt earn him the rope if ever it came to the day's light.
As he walked, avoiding the gallows gaze, he noticed... he was being looked at.
Jack was somewhat accustomed to this; he didn't like stroking his own ego, but... he knew he was a fairly handsome gent. And being the town's young doctor, he'd had more than enough calls for 'Hysteria' and 'Thigh Pain' to figure out the ladies in town liked him. So having young ladies watching him and giggling to themselves wasn't uncommon. But this felt... different.
He met his eyes with hers briefly, attempting to gauge a reason she was watching him so intently.
She stood by a market stall just two down from him. She wore laced black boots, no doubt stockings that were not visible to his eye, a long bell-shaped green plaid dress with many petticoats below it, a fairly short fitted bodice with some pleating sewn in, sleeves puffed at the shoulders tapering down at her elbows and remaining tight until her wrists. She wore a black belt, along with matching gloves and a black poke bonnet hat with a green ribbon.
She narrowed her eyes at him, her brows low. Seemingly glaring at him.
Jack began to grow worried; he did... vaguely seem to recognise her. And immediately began wondering if she was someone he'd somehow upset. But either way, she came closer.
"I- Forgive me," She said, "I do not intend to stare, I just..."
"Just?" he asked, "What?"
"I'm sorry," she chuckled to herself, "You... you remind me so much of a boy I once knew."
"I do?"
"Yes, I... I am sorry, I just... Thought for a moment I had seen a ghost." She laughed, "But that's quite impossible,"
"Who exactly do I remind you of? If you don't mind my asking?" He asked, moving a little closer, still unable to shake the familiar feeling he had when he looked at her.
"A lifetime ago," she shook her head, "A young boy I used to know, in London's smoggiest of days. I do so miss my Dodger, such a sweet boy."
Immediately, his blood ran cold, "D-Dodger?" he choked,
"Yes, why?"
"No..." He gasped softly. Suddenly, it all fell into place. "No, you- You're not- E-Evie?!"
She looked as shocked as he was, gulping in pure panic, "J-Jack?"
"It- it can't be true... After all these years, Evelynn?!"
"Jack! I - I can't believe it!"
Without even a care for where they were, they immediately fell into each other's arms, almost crying after so long apart.
"I- I never thought I'd see you again," he choked, squeezing her tightly, almost scared she'd disappear if he let go.
"I thought you were dead!" She whined, "Ohh, Jack, I'm so happy to see you."
"You have no idea how much I've missed you, Evie."
"Excuse me?!" A sharp voice cut through their joy,
And as they looked, Jack quickly put space between himself and Evie the second he saw Belle looking at them.
"Belle! Uhhhhh.... Hello." He gulped,
"What exactly is going on here!?" She asked, clearly already angry at him,
"I.... uhhh...." he gulped, looking between both Evie and Belle, "I promise I can explain."
