A/N: VERY LONG AWAITED UPDATEEEE!! Sorry it's a short chapter!

Walking back into my house feels like being hit with a brick of reality. No family pictures, no bright colours or warm feelings. For some reason, standing in this room feels lonelier than ever.

I check my phone and find three missed calls from Jake and multiple "Hey, how are you?" and "Please text me when you get these" messages, but as soon as I open my phone to respond,... 0% battery.

I throw my phone onto the couch and fall onto the floor in defeat. One deep breath at a time. My Grannie Alice once told me, 'The times that feel the hardest are the times that one learns the most.' With that advice, I pick myself up and become strangely aware of how over-complicated things have become.

I hear a knock at my door and turn in confusion, a robber? old creepy relative? Slowly, I creep towards it and look through my peephole. Phew.

As soon as I crack open the door, it's pushed open and large warm arms surround me. In this moment, I realise how lucky I am. How lucky I am to have someone who protects me, cares for me, and checks up on me all the time. I think because I always grew up feeling so misplaced, I had convinced myself that no one would ever truly love someone. To be honest, I don't know if I have understood the true meaning of love. But, never have I felt this way, where my heart drops at the sound of his voice and the warm, familiar scent brings me a feeling of ease. It just feels right.

I take a step back from Jake, and he looks at me with wide eyes.

"Where have you been? Why haven't you been answering my calls?" he questions me with concern, tracing his eyes over my body, looking for any signs of danger.

I bring my hands up to his face, cupping his jaw. His body relaxes with my touch. Slowly, I creep up on my tiptoes and place a gentle kiss on his lips. Before I can balance myself back down on the floor, he pulls me in, capturing me in with a kiss as if he were starving. He grabs my waist and lifts me off the floor, spinning me around while covering my face in small, soft kisses. I giggle as his small beard stubble tickles my face.

He places me down gently and simply just looks at me, admiring all my flaws and imperfections.

"I love you," I spit out. Suddenly, I'm aware of what I just said, and I slap a hand over my mouth in shock. I look up at Jake's face, with his mouth dropped open slightly.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" I give up and just stand there in silence.

"Wait here," he says before running out the door towards his car.

Oh my fucking god. I send palms to my forehead before squatting in embarrassment. His footsteps slowly get louder as I look up and see him in the doorway with a bouquet of red roses.

All of the air in my lungs empty.

"Amelia, I think I love you more than I've ever loved myself."

"You idiot," is all I can spit out with the biggest smile plastered on my face. I stand up and run to him, jumping into his arms, he lifts me easily, one arm holding my back tightly and the other keeping the flowers steady.

---

Hours have passed since Jake and I said we loved each other, and it feels surreal. We sit wrapped in each other's arms on my bed. His chest rising and falling beneath my head, and his heart beating softly. I hear soft snoring and look up to see him fast asleep.

He looks so innocent and fragile, I have the urge to cook him soup and protect him from the dangers of the world. As cringey as it sounds, it's true.

"You might burn a hole through me if you keep staring, so hard" he whispers, keeping his eyes closed.

I slap his chest softly and let out a small giggle.

"Mils, will you be my girlfriend?" I hear quietly from above me.

I freeze at his question.
