After that phone call from China telling me that Onika was in the hospital, I didn't waste a second, I hopped on my plane immediately.
Chubbs, Ant, and Baka rolled with me. I didn't even have to ask. The second I told them what was up, they were already moving with me.
Now, I was here, standing outside Onika's hospital room, leaning against the wall, arms crossed as China and Rylee filled me in on what happened.
Every word they spoke only made my anger rise, and by the time Kevin's name was mentioned, I could barely keep myself from pacing. My fists clenched at my sides as I stared at the floor.
"How?" I asked, my voice tight. "How the fuck did he even find her?"
China sighed, shaking her head. "We don't know yet, Aubrey. But somehow, they did."
"And Omari witnessed all of this?" I asked, my voice a little lower. I turned to Rylee, and she shook her head.
"No," she said. "Onika told him to go to his room, but he heard everything. You could hear him screaming, telling Kevin to stop."
My chest tightened at that.
Omari was just a kid.
He shouldn't have had to witness something like that—shouldn't have had to hear his mom getting hurt.
I exhaled through my nose, trying to contain myself, but then Rylee pulled out her phone. "I forgot," she murmured, "It's on the Ring camera."
I didn't even blink before she hit play.
And there it was.
Kevin. Slapping Onika.
My jaw clenched so hard I thought my teeth might crack. My vision blurred with rage as I watched Onika fall back, her hand flying to her face, and Omari's cries filled the audio.
I watched Onika try to fight back. She swung at Kevin, pushing at him, trying to defend herself—but it was no use. He was bigger, stronger, and he took full advantage of that.
I forced myself to finish watching the video.
The sound of Onika's voice, the way she was fighting, the way she was trying so hard even though she had no chance—it made my blood boil.
I handed the phone back to Rylee but I didn't say shit. Instead, I turned to Baka and gave him a look.
He didn't hesitate. He just nodded, already knowing what that meant.
Find that nigga.
"Where's Omari?" I asked.
"He's with my boyfriend," she answered. "I didn't want him to see her like this any more than he already has."
