I was driving through downtown after getting back into Chicago with 5 year old singing along to the Disney songs I had playing in the car.
"Are we going to see Daddy?!" She asked finally excited.
"Daddy is most likely working. We're going to look at the new space for mommy's new store." I said trying to make it sound exciting.
"Can I pick out what corner will be the kids reading corner?!" Melissa, my daughter asked.
"Of course you can sweetie." I smiled looking at her in the rear view mirror. I then stopped at a red light.
"After we go to the shop can you call daddy?" Melissa asked and I sighed.
"Mel, daddy doesn't even know we are in town. I didn't tell him we were coming yet. I need to make that call first." I said and she crossed her arms getting a small attitude.
Her father, Kelly Severide and I, we were a quick flash in the pan marriage years ago. We got married after only 2 weeks of knowing each other and Mel came along right after.
We were divorced right after Mel was born but Kelly was a good father and always showed up. Shit hit the fan when Melissa turned 2 and I told Kelly I was moving to Florida since I had a great job opportunity down there to run a bookstore with a friend.
Now I was back in Chicago after the friend and I had a falling out about the bookstore in Florida and she wanted to sell to a major chain and tear down our store. She bought me out and now I was going to open a new store in Chicago. Chicago was home, where I belonged.
We pulled up to the small shop right outside the downtown area but still on the main road and had a lot of foot traffic. I got Melissa from the car and we walked up to the realtor who was standing outside.
"Reese?" She asked seeing me and I smiled.
"Yeah." I smiled as I shook her hand with my free hand that wasn't holding Melissa's hand.
"Well nice to finally meet you in person and I can't wait to show you the space." She said as she unlocked the store and we walked in.
I saw all the bookshelves already on the wall and in the store since it was a bookstore years ago until the owner passed away had no one to take it over.
"So as you see the space already had everything you would need for setup, all included in the price." Maureen said and I just nodded. Melissa let go of my hand and went running.
"Mommy I found it!" She squealed and I smiled going to find her up on a small little platform. "This could be the corner!" Melissa said excited and I nodded.
"I think so too." I smiled at her. I looked at the realtor who looked confused. "I have a kids story time planned, I did it in Florida and my daughter loved it. She wanted to pick out the special corner like I used to have in Florida." I said and she smiled.
