Chapter 10

"Hey Duskstar," Tigerclaw mewed. The leader turned to him. "I'm going to gather herbs with the apprentices and couple of the warriors to gather herbs."
"Okay. Would you like Onefang to help you?" the charcoal black tom offered."Well, I am having trouble selecting who will go" he replied. "I'll help you select who'll go."Onfang offered, coming back into camp from a boarder patrol."Okay." Tigerclaw replied. The two cats walk to the warrior's den. "Anycat want to help Tigerclaw gather herbs?" the deputy asked."I guess I'll help"Bluejay offered. "Lillypaw told me he was out of some." The blue/light gray warrior pointed out."I'll come!" Heatherstorm beamed as she bounded after Bluejay. "I'd like to lend a paw." Ottertail offered. "This seems like enough?" Onefang asked the medicine cat. Tigerclaw nodded. "We leave at Moonhigh. That way we'll be safe."
"Yeah! It's a good strategic time. Less cats are out at night." Ottertail added."But some things are more than us, nevertheless it's settled I guess." Onefang meowed.
Silverleap was talking with Whitemane as Blackflight watched from afar.Mothshine and Ravenfeather were beside him.The elderly tom gave the black and white warrior a look.Blackflight suddenly took notice."Why are you looking at me that?"
"You know why." Mothshine joked."Wh-no--no I don't!"he stammered."Like you don't know,you were watching her" Ravenfeather purred."With great interest I might add hmm Ravenfeather?"the short black pelted she-cat asked with an amused look."In fact I believe you were enraptured by her.That lovely gray pelt,those blue eyes,why,I can't see why no other tom in the clan has taken an interest in asking her to be her mate"Ravenfeather teased."S-so what?Just because I stared-I mean glared at her,it-it means nothing"the warrior turned away from the elders with his head high."Oh I see,"Crescentwing purred."Why are you joining in?"Blackflight asked annoyed."Don't talk to me like that"she growed."Anyways you were saying Crescentwing?"Ravenfeather asked."I was going to ask him what he thought when he glared at the lovely she-cat?"the elder purred to Blackflight."You see I was gl--no no! I was just-um..".The tom looked back at Silverleap who was done talking with Whitemane and walked in their general direction."Hello Ravenfeather,Crescentwing,and Mothshine,"she happened to glare at Blackflight."Hello to you as well Blackflight" she purred sheepishly."Hi Silverleap"the tom mewed.She blinked "Hey! How about you and me? Hunting at Moonhigh?"
The elders stared at the two young cats. "Yeah,I'd love to"he mewed.
Dawnfrost walked around camp.He walked to Hollyflight."Hey"he greeted awkwardly.Hollyflight looked up from sorting her herbs."Greetings Dawnfrost."
"Tigerclaw's going on a herb gathering at Moonhigh" he pointed out. Hollyflight got back to her herbs."Yes Liontail's having troubles sleeping at night with her kits, I'm staying here so I watch over her to find the problem before the kits are born."
"But isn't Ottertail going with Tigerclaw and the others?" the white pelted warrior asked concerned. "Yes but I don't want Liontail to be uncomfortable with more cats watching her." Hollyflight explained. She placed an herb in a crack of the wall. Hollyflight gave a curt nod. Dawnfrost looked at the herbs."Huh Onefang did need to organize a hunt. This looks like a low prey heap." Hollyflight looked up at Dawnfrost and tilts his head."He's very distracted as of late and I have a few hunches but still clueless he's herb collecting is slacking."
"Then the season of Newleaf is here which means rain I believe?" Dawnfrost mentioned. "Yes and changes of sick cats we need to stay on our paws."
"And Duskstar...he's fairly aging," he muttered. He turned to the leader. He had a few gray tufts on his muzzle."I never expected him to get old so fast."
Hollyflight nods. "I have my paws full this season."
"And have you noticed Tigerclaw's been looking odd? Almost as if he's hiding something--or has been hiding something?"Dawnfrost asked as he helped her put a herb in the crack of the wall of the medicine cats den. Hollyflight stores some herbs in the back. "Like I said I have my hunches about him."
The moon was almost across the sky. "But Ottertail do you have to go?" Liontail whined. "What about our kits?"
Ottertail pawed at the ground and flicked his yes looking back at the herb party and Liontail."Liontail I have to go and Hollyflight is here,the kits are due for a bit anyway"."Yeah plus you offered to help so I can't stop you and I won't"Liontail purred.Hollyflight pads over to Liontail and Ottertail after giving Dawnfrost a curt nod."Liontail, it's nearly Moonhigh, Ottertail needs to go with the others and you need to be resting." Liontail gave her mate a gentle lick on the cheek. "Be careful." Ottertail nodded and rested his head on top of Liontail's then bounded after the rest of the herb party, Hollyflight sat infront of Liontail and looked at her."Oh Darkpaw be careful!" Goldensparrow meowed to her son. Hawkleaf, Jadepelt, and Dusty all groomed their children before they left with the warriors."Mama I'm tired of being clean!" Feralpaw meowed to Jadepelt. The mother flicked her tail on Feralpaw's nose."Hush kit and sit still." The young apprentice flattened his ears. Lillypaw purred with amusement."You're next." Jadepelt mewed. Lillypaw flattened to the ground with her eyes wide with fright and scurried and hid behind the prey pile. Dusty picked up his daughter by the scruff."Dad!"
"Lillypaw, you are a she-cat and you are supposed be clean." Dusty mewed before Jadepelt could tell her. Lillypaw flailed her legs about trying to get down."I can clean myself! Put me down!"
Lightpaw purred with amusement."You look like a squirrel!" Lillypaw growled in response. "Shut up Lightpaw! I'll show you squirrel!!"
"Darkpaw! Feralpaw! Lightpaw and Lillypaw!! We haven't got all night!" Bluejay called.Darkpaw smacked the other three on the back of their heads and flicked his tail over to the patrol."We're coming Bluejay!"
Lightpaw rubbed her head. "Let's go guys." the she-cat padded over to the patrol.
It was Moonhigh. Duskstar leaped upon the great rock. "All cats old enough to catch their own prey join me beneath the Great Rock for a clan meeting!".Hollyflight shakes her head frustrated and pads over to the great rock and meows up to Duskstar."Oh what now?!"
"I am letting the clan say their goodbyes before Tigerclaw and the others leave." Duskstar answered. Hollyflight grunted. "Duskstar, you are losing your mind with your age."
The leader snorted. "Fine."
Hollyflight yowled up, "All it is, is a herb collecting patrol! If the party doesn't leave now I'll show the clan the warrior in this medicine cat!" Hollyflight glares at Duskstar with her fur bristling. All the cats did was stare.
"We will return." Tigerclaw said. And with that, the eight warriors left the camp. Feralpaw saw Hollyflight watch as them leave as she sat with her tail wrapped around her paws, facing the camp and closed her eyes and smoothed her fur down like nothing had happened.
"Alright guys,keep your eyes and noses sharp"Tigerclaw instructed.Bluejay looked around eyeing the forest closely and shuddered. Feralpaw looked around and saw a bush with spiky dark green leaves with purple berries."Hey! I found something!"
"Good job Feralpaw! You found Juniper Berries!"Tigerclaw meowed.Bluejay padded over to the other apprentices and eyed the forest over by them too and shuddered."Uh Bluejay you ok?" Lightpaw asked. Bluejay simply nodded and padded to a different area once again eyeing the forest and shuddered. Darkpaw saw a bush."Hey what are these red berries?"he went over to touch one. Lightpaw blocked his path and hissed at him, "Don't touch those mouse brain!"
"These are Deathberries." Ottertail replied to Darkpaw."Like I said mouse brain." Lightpaw said as she swiped at Darkpaw's ears."Lightpaw!" Heatherstorm yowled as she pulled the apprentice away from her brother."Darkpaw deserves it!" Lightpaw yowled as she backed off and sat huffily on the ground. Suddenly, a twig snapped. The warriors silenced themselves. Bluejay flicked her tail telling all the warriors to gather and whispered, "I knew something wasn't right." Tigerclaw saw a cat dash past him. Bluejay saw the cat, yowled and bounded after it, leaped and pinned the cat down."Who goes there?!" she spat and demanded. It was a large white tom with black paws. Suddenly, cats from every direction lunged at the warriors. Bluejay yowled a battle cry and unsheathed her claws and swiped at the cats flooding in the area."Darkpaw! Go get help!" Ottertail yowled leaping into battle along side the blue/light gray she-cat. Darkpaw scrambled out of the area swiping at a cat or two before bounding at full speed back to camp.
