Alisha left her alone after that. Which Annabelle was incredibly thankful for. She really didn't want to be bothered about what was going on between her and Nathan at the moment, especially not when she felt awful enough about it without being questioned on whether they were having sex.
She tried her best to focus on their work, for once. She'd even stuck an earbud in to try and help her focus. It was tedious work and insanely annoying to do anyway, but the music drowning out her thoughts made it easier. With no one talking to her, she was able to relax. At least a bit.
By the time she'd managed to finish scraping all the poster off the pillar, Nathan had suddenly looked up from his own work, brows furrowed and an almost concerned look on his face. Which was already odd enough. Nathan was never concerned. He was the least concerned with anything, no matter what it was. So seeing that look on his face put Annabelle on edge.
"D'you hear that?" He directed the question towards the three women. They listened for a moment... but it was silent. The only sound audible was the soft crash of waves from the river as they hit against concrete.
Kelly scrunched up her face, giving Nathan a confused look. "What?" Nathan's expression shifted into what looked like thoughtfulness. "A baby crying."
Annabelle stared at him for a moment, deadpan. She almost couldn't believe herself. This was who had been making her feel so damn stupid the past few weeks. A complete idiot. "There's no baby cryin', Nathan." She muttered with a small shake of her head. He squinted at her, but slowly turned back to the pillar he'd been working on.
Though that was only for a moment. Within a second, he'd tossed his scraper to the ground with a clatter and run off into the community centre.
The four remaining misfits all gave each other confused glances before shrugging it off, chalking it up to Nathan being a complete twat, as usual, and continuing with their work for the day. It was peaceful for a few minutes, and Annabelle forgot about the interaction as Paramore's All I Wanted blasted in her ear. Though with the six of them, peace never lasted long.
Frantic, heavy steps caught her attention, along with the other three. Who all paused to look over to see what the noise was about. Simon came running towards them and practically skidded to a halt, face scrunched up in worry. He was panting as he pointed over his shoulder. "I think I've just seen Nathan stealing a baby."
That was all it took to get the four to drop what they were holding and rush off back to the main building, following after Simon. "He just ran off with him," He explained with a frown, his pace quick as he led the others in the direction Nathan had run off in.
Alisha let out a small scoff. "Why would he take a baby?" She thought aloud, shaking her head.
"If he gets caught he's screwed," Curtis added, looking to Annabelle. "Call the prick!" He gestured to the shorter woman, who nodded and fumbled for her phone. She pulled it out of her pocket and found Nathan's contact easily.
She pressed the call button, but her heart stopped when it simply went to voicemail. "It's switched off." She announced quietly.
The group picked up the pace, running around frantically to try and find Nathan. It would be really shit for everyone if Nathan got caught with a baby that wasn't his. Fuck know why he stole a damn baby in the first place.
After a bit of running, Curtis spotted him. "There," He muttered, pointing upwards. Annabelle cursed under her breath at the sight. Nathan was standing on the roof, way too close to the edge, with a baby in his arms. "Fuckin' hell..." She heard somebody hiss before they all broke into a run. Thudding footsteps went up the stairs before skidding to a stop.
