Chapter 28
The Watershed family had a house directly behind the King and Queen's house. It looked as I imagined all of the village looked. The King and Queen did not knock on the door or ask their guards to knock for them. They walked into the house and took a seat in the living room while informing us to sit with them. Within a minute a middle aged couple walked into the room and sat in the two remaining seats available. The woman had brown, medium length hair, and looked like she just got out of the water. Her hair was still wet and the clothes were slightly damp. I am guessing she quickly put on dry clothes without fully drying off her body. The man looked like he had brown hair at one point, but most of it was gone. He only had shorts on, and no shirt, and I am guessing he also got out of the water with his wife. The woman had darker skin and both of them looked exhausted. They smiled politely at Sam and I after bowing and greeting their King and Queen.
"This is Zola and Kendric Watershed," The King explained to Sam and I. "Kendric is my closest friend and Zola is my wife's closest friend. We weigh their opinion highly. You have all of today to speak with them."
With that we were left alone with Zola and Kendric. Kendric went to the kitchen and brought back two glasses of water for Sam and I. "We will begin," Zola spoke up, "because I am sure it is awkward stepping into a strange land without knowing anyone else."
I smiled, "Yes it is a bit awkward."
"Kendric and I moved to the island after our first year of marriage. It was a difficult decision, but we decided to leave the group we grew up in so we could live here with the King and Queen. We never felt like we were helping our race in any way and we wanted to be successful. Kendric and I agreed that the best way to do that was by living here on the island and keeping an eye on the entire race. The King and Queen welcomed us with open arms and wanted us to get to know them and the village before they made a decision about whether we could stay. That is how we became friends."
"What is your position here?" Sam asked.
"I helped the Queen with her important decisions and Kendric helps the King with his important decisions. We speak for the people. We walk through and speak with all the villagers here to see how they feel about our problems then we swim to the other groups and ask what they think about our current problems. They even tell us about problems they need help with and we bring them up to the King and Queen."
"That is why they wanted us to talk with you first?" I guessed.
Kendric nodded, "They always come to us first and we take them to the next in line."
"What would you like to know first?" Sam asked them.
"Are your people gone?" Kendric asked.
Sam looked over at me and I shook my head. "I assure you, the Tigmas are not gone. My parents never would have allowed our people to go extinct. The humans, the Silthra, and the witches cannot know that any of us are still alive. If they do we will go extinct."
"We are not here to reveal your secrets to them. Our people do not approve of them either," Zola said.
"We also need to know why you came to us and how you knew this island was here," Kendric added.
"We owe that to the Carter family friend Caroline Donahue," Sam told them. "Caroline left us instructions and several books to follow. We have not read everything, but she lets us know what we need to know. She told us where to find the island."
"She told us if we can convince everyone on this island that we are trustworthy then we will win over your entire race."
Zola smiled, "Caroline is a wise woman."
