The next week at school, the days became warmer. Dry days soaked up the countless hours looking at the clock. Viola was sitting next to Erica, Lucy and Trix at the wooden benches at lunch time. Lucy was tracing 1984 into the table. Over the last few weeks, Viola's inquisitive nature noticed Colin's new mysterious attitude. He was always so laid back and charismatic. Underneath that you could see an unsure smile, a worried glance. Colin always shrugged off personal questions. Viola deeply cared about Colin as a friend and would try to dive into his world.
Erica was letting them know about someone new she had spotted at work. Apparently his name was Pascal. Viola was only vaguely listening and was more interested in the dumbstruck people who wandered past. A large boy ran to the bubblier, his bag smacking his back. Another, a year seven perhaps jumped to reach the wooden rafters but failed miserably and tried to shrug it off but he landed back on his feet casually. Viola laughed to herself of the stupidity.
"Hes in the stock department and he gave me this weird smile as he went past the register. Like the one where you feel goosebumps inside. He was very, very good looking." Erica finished her tale. Viola turned her head towards her.
" Ah" Lucy rubbed her hands in unison with Erica as they made sound sounds of awe. Viola rolled her eyes. Viola bit into her wrap and a large amount if tomato slopped onto the ground. Viola looked up as she pushes back a large piece of brown hair in her eyes. All of a sudden Lissa was coming over to her, looking rather irritated. She was holding at brightly colored sports hoe in the air at viola.
"Give me my shoe!" Lissa whined at Viola hitting her over the head with the shoe lightly. Viola laughed.
"What happened?" Erica asked. Lucy was giggling as she munched on multiple pieces of pasta. Trix looked up briefly but continued to draw. Her hands moved about the page. She was detailing the curls upon some mans head. He had tufts of hair on his chin. The man looked sleepy and held a cup of coffee. A girl with long curly hair was illustrated on the opposite page. Trix had drawn her looking at the sleepy man. The girl had a demon tail and psychotic smile.
"She stole my bloody shoe!" Lissa tried to say furiously but ended up joining the laughter. Viola looked at her leaning her head to the side portraying an act of innocence. Viola knew very well where the shoe was but she enjoyed the thrill of the chase.
"Well I saw an oppontunite moment and trust me I saved you a lot of grief." Viola crossed her legs and leaned back. She continued after taking a sip from her water bottle.
"Amanda was about to steal your bag but i compromised for your shoe instead" Viola smiled back mischievously.
Austin and Colin came round the corner to join the commotion. "Ladies, ladies, Lissa I believe i know where your shoe is. Sadly i not able to tell you." Austin grinned at Lissa.
"Fine, fine look in your pdhpe bag" Viola pointed to her hessian bag hanging from her small right arm. Lissa looked at her in disbelief but reached her hand into the bag. Erica and Lucy were sneaking underneath the teachers lounge window. Every so often they would take a close up of a teacher. They laughed each time. Colin gave viola a small smile and mouthed "what did you do?" Viola held up he hands and grinned.
A silence passed over the group, except for Erica and Lucy who were having a fit on the ground. Lissa pulled an identical shoe to the one she was holding i her other hand from the bag. Lissa stared at Viola with an exaggerated frustration expression.
" I give up, nup nup I give up" Lissa hit Viola over the head lightly once more and walked off to join Clara and Katie. Over her shoulder she yelled out; "Jokes, I love you V!" and turned round and made a love heart with her fingers.
Viola joined the joke and yelled ; " Love ya!". Viola walked over to look at a close up of a science teacher baring a grim expression. Lucy was adding stickers to the picture.
Austin and Colin sat on the wooden bench. Viola saw them trying to sling shot a potato across a building. Just before Austin let the sling go, a teacher pushed their head out a window.
"Powers, I expect your initiating an experiment" The teacher rolled his eyes and poked his head back in. Another teacher stared out the window in disbelief at the giant slingshot. Austin's last name wasn't really powers. It had been an adopted name to him as he was spontaneous and comical.
Colin and Austin launched the potato into the air and it went soaring across the sky landing deadset on a car window in the carpark. Quickly Colin and Austin dismantled the slingshot and sat back down casually. Viola laughed.
"Viola, lets go check it out" Colin asked and she jumped up and they walked away from the group. As the two of them neared the car park Colin spoke up.
"I'm thinking of asking Lucy or Lissa out. I like both of them but you know them well." Colin raised his eyebrows at Viola. Viola thought for a moment before answering.
"They're both my best friends. Either girl you go with you'll be happy. Lissa is sweet and gentle and Lucy is wild and funny. They both like you though." Viola skipped up to the car with the potato spat.
"I'll think it over. Do you think anyone saw?" Colin shifted his eyes to see if anyone was eyeing a potato mash on a black Subaru.
"Why did you move?" Viola looked at Colin she held her hands behind her back in anxiety. Colin turned away from her for a moment and sighed. His cheery, laid back attitude diapered.
"Um, its not something i like to talk about. I think i will tell you eventually but... I did something. I did something bad at my old school. I thought running and hiding it may work. I just had to get the detective as the best friend didn't i? Colin laughed and grabbed a hat off the ground.
He wiped the potato stain. Viola stayed silent and watched. Once the splatter was less noticeable, Colin spoke again.
"People past free them and condemn them. What i'm hiding is a secret and I'm still finding it even hard to pass on. Be patient but if St Scott's is a high school it'll come out eventually." Colin gave Viola a friendly smile and walked back to his bag.
