I pace in my room back and forth, constantly checking the time and contemplating.
Is now a good time to go to the attic? Should I wait just a little longer to make sure Lucifer is truly immersed in the soundtrack enough to not notice me? How long is a little longer?
Finally feeling impatient, I decide that enough is enough and I quietly sneak out my room, checking the hallways.
Empty. It seems everyone is asleep.
Except, of course, for the demon with faint music still echoing from his room.
Please work. Please work. PLEASE. WORK.
I hold my breath as I once more take off my shoes, tiptoeing with socks to avoid making the slightest of sounds. I make my way to the staircase, feeling my heart pounding in my ears.
One step....
Two steps....
Three steps....
I move slowly, ears twitching at the softest creaks in the wooden floorboards.
Eventually, I get to the point I never made it past before—where Lucifer always caught me. My eyes flick around, alert.
He isn't here.
I'm scared, was this a good idea?
-"Help..."
I jolt at the sound of that same familiar soft voice beckoning me up, determination filling me as I pick up the pace.
One step. Two steps. Three steps.
I will know who Lucifer is hiding upstairs. Because if it is true that he is holding a person dear to me as hostage I will...I will...
Brick wall.
-"Huh?!"
I blink at the wall that stood in front of me at the top of the stairs, confused.
-"Help me!"
No, I can definitely still hear someone behind the wall. Is this a trick? An illusion?
Am I schizophrenic?
I reach out and press my hand against the wall—And it ripples.
Like water. Like smoke. Like it was never solid to begin with.
My fingers sink through the bricks, and with a soft shatter, the illusion cracks. The wall melts away, stone by stone, into dust and light.
I stumble back. "What the hell—"
I didn't even do anything.
My eyes land on what look like a cell, initially hidden behind the wall, and in it, a man quickly stood in alarm, purple eyes wide at the sight of me.
A demon. One that I have never ever seen in my entire life. Then how come I thought he was someone I knew?!
-"You broke it." He whispered in awe, he ran to grip the metal bars, giving a breathless laugh, "How did you even manage to-?"
-"Who are you?" I interrupt, walking up to the cell with a frown. There is no doubt about it, he is the owner of the voice that kept begging for help.
So why did I think his voice was familiar?
Wait, how did his voice even reach me downstairs?! Did this demon use magic to lure me here?
He chuckled, ignoring my question and grinning at me eagerly, "How on earth did you manage to break Lucifer's spell?"
