"Well, it looks like I'm staying with you for a month..and I don't have a car!" I huff as I begin to walk back to Nathan's house.
Nathan runs up and grab a my left shoulder, forcing me to stop and turn around. "Wait..your still talking to me?" He says, sounding surprised.
"Why wouldn't I?" Nathan shoves his hands in the front pockets of his jeans.
"Now you know my big secret." He looks town towards the pavement. Does he mean the foster kid secret?
I walk up to Nate. I'm so close that it forces him to look into my eyes.
"Why would I care? It's not that big of a deal."
"Not a big deal!? Of course it is!" He starts pacing in the empty parking lot.
"Wh-" I begin to say until Nathan cuts me off.
"Shyanne." He walks up to me. "Do you know why I'm a foster kid? Obviously not.." he pauses and grabs my hand. "Let's just go."
Natey starts pulling me down the sidewalk, in the wrong direction. I yank my hand away and cross my arms.
"I'm not going anywhere until you tell me." My right foot stomps the concrete beneath me.
"No." He clenches his jaw and reaches for my arm but I pull it away.
"Tell me."
"No. Let's go!" He reaches for my arm again, but I pull it away.
"I'm very stubborn..I'm. Not. Going. Anywhere, until you tell me." I say to him. I'm not backing down. I want to know.
He sighs. "Can I tell you as we walk." I nod and turn around. "Where are you going?"
"Home. You were going the wrong way." He catches up to me and begins talking.
"Well, a few months after D. M. was born," I look at him quizzically. "Daisy Mae." He answers my unspoken question, then continues on.
"My mom was in a huge car crash. Daisy was with my dad and I was in school." He begins to tear up but continues talking after we turn down a shortcut to our homes. "She passed away that day." My heart lurches and feels like it's been flattened into a pancake. A few tears escape Nathan's eyes and I grab his hand and squeeze it. "It was really hard for us. Dad took Ma's death the hardest.. About five months later he became very depressed and hung himself." Nathan's tears fell down his face like a river. I stoped walking and was hugging him in an instant.
"Daisy was always called Daisy, until about a year later. She wanted to be called by her first and middle names in remmberance of ma. Mom's name was Mae. Dad insisted that we name Daisy partially after her, since she had mom's blonde hair." Nathan slowly stops crying. "For the past four and a half years Daisy and I have been bouncing from home to home.."
"Nate..I..I'm so sorry." I say not knowing what else to say. "I'm sorry that happened to you. And I'm sorry I made you tell me!" I think about what I'd do if my mom was killed in a huge accident..a few tears escape my eyes and I quickly wipe them away before Nate notices.
"Now you know.." We reach Nate's front door. Nathan's eyes are tear free. "After you, princess." He holds the door open for me and I enter the hours I'll be living in for the next month.
