The afternoon sun cast long shadows across Ponyville as Rumble made his way down the dusty path toward Sweet Apple Acres. His hoofsteps were unhurried—after all, Thunderlane had said he'd be at the farm when school let out, and Cheerilee had been surprisingly generous by not assigning any homework for the entire week. A whole week of freedom stretched ahead of him, and he found himself mentally cycling through his options. Maybe he'd spend some time at Featherweight's house, working on those comic books they'd been sketching together. Or perhaps Button Mash would be up for another marathon gaming session.
For a brief moment, the thought of hanging out with Scootaloo flitted through his mind, but he quickly pushed it aside. She'd been practically glued to Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom lately, the three of them always huddled together working on their latest Cutie Mark Crusader scheme. He didn't want to intrude on their friendship, even though... well, even though it stung a little. When had he started missing her company so much? When had thoughts of the orange pegasus filly started occupying so much space in his head?
He shook his mane, trying to dispel the confusing feelings. Whatever this was—jealousy, loneliness, something else entirely—he wasn't ready to examine it too closely.
The familiar red barn and sprawling apple orchards of Sweet Apple Acres came into view as he crested the small hill. After pushing through the wooden gate, Rumble spotted two familiar figures near the farmhouse porch. Applejack and Thunderlane were deep in conversation, their heads close together as they shared what appeared to be a private joke. Applejack's melodic laughter carried across the yard, and Thunderlane's wing brushed affectionately against her side.
Rumble's nose scrunched up involuntarily. Ugh. Couple stuff.
Don't get him wrong—he genuinely liked Applejack. She was honest, hardworking, and treated him with the same straightforward kindness she showed everypony. But ever since she and his older brother had started dating, witnessing their displays of affection had become an exercise in awkward endurance. The worst part was how much he'd started to relate to Apple Bloom. There was an unspoken understanding between them now, a shared sense of sibling solidarity born from mutual embarrassment. Both of them would exchange knowing looks whenever Thunderlane and Applejack got particularly mushy, and both would make exaggerated gagging motions when the couple wasn't looking.
Of course, Thunderlane and Applejack had caught on to their reactions pretty quickly, and now they seemed to take a perverse pleasure in ramping up the romance whenever their younger siblings were around.
As Rumble approached, Thunderlane's ears perked up and he turned toward his younger brother with a grin. "Hey there, sport! Perfect timing. We were just talking about you."
Rumble tilted his head, one eyebrow arching skeptically. "About me? Should I be worried?"
Applejack chuckled, her green eyes twinkling with amusement. "Nothing too scandalous, sugar cube. Apple Bloom and I are planning a camping trip to Winsome Falls this weekend—you know, some good old-fashioned sister bonding time under the stars."
Thunderlane cleared his throat theatrically, puffing out his chest with exaggerated importance. "Naturally, being the considerate stallion that I am, I suggested that we might join these lovely mares on their wilderness adventure."
The words hit Rumble like a bucket of cold water. His stomach dropped as the implications became crystal clear. A camping trip. With Thunderlane and Applejack. Who would undoubtedly spend the entire time being disgustingly romantic while he and Apple Bloom tried to pretend they couldn't see or hear any of it.
"Uh..." Rumble's voice came out as a strangled squeak. He coughed and tried again. "I mean... that sounds... great."
Thunderlane's grin widened. He could clearly read his little brother's expression like an open book. "So I take it you don't have any objections to this plan? No burning desire to spend your vacation week doing something else?"
