The spiral staircase wound endlessly upward around the exterior of the white crystal tower. Comet Tail, Twilight Sparkle, and Spike had been climbing for what felt like hours, their initial urgency gradually giving way to exhaustion.
"How... much... further?" Spike gasped, his short legs struggling to keep pace with the unicorns. His scales had lost their usual luster, now coated with a fine sheen of sweat.
Twilight looked up, squinting against the bright light reflecting off the crystal surfaces. "We're maybe... halfway there?" she estimated, trying to keep the discouragement from her voice.
Comet's cracked glasses kept slipping down his muzzle as perspiration dampened his face. He readjusted them with a hoof and paused momentarily to catch his breath. "We can't... stop now," he panted. "Every minute counts."
They pressed onward, their hooves and claws heavy with fatigue. The staircase was treacherously narrow with no railing to prevent a disastrous fall to the ground far below.
As they climbed, the whispers returned—faint at first, barely distinguishable from the wind, but growing steadily more insistent. Unlike before, these whispers seemed to be directed specifically at Comet.
"What's that noise?" Spike asked, his ears twitching nervously.
"Just ignore it," Twilight advised, remembering the disorienting effect the whispers had had in the stairwell below. "It's another of Sombra's tricks."
But Comet found he couldn't ignore them. The whispers seemed to coalesce around him, becoming clearer with each step he took. Words began to form amidst the sibilant hissing:
"Umbrum..." "Amore..."
Comet's steps faltered as the words penetrated his consciousness. "Do you hear that?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Before either Twilight or Spike could respond, the world around Comet began to blur and shift. The white crystal tower, the endless stairs, even Twilight and Spike—all of it dissolved like mist, replaced by a new scene that unfolded before him as if he were watching through another pony's eyes.
A young grey unicorn colt galloped through a crystal garden, his black mane disheveled, his green eyes bright with laughter. He wore a makeshift cape fashioned from what appeared to be a kitchen towel. Chasing after him was a dark purple unicorn filly with a flowing blue mane, wielding a stick as if it were a sword.
"Face me, dragon!" the filly cried out dramatically. "I, the brave knight, shall defeat you and save the Crystal Empire!"
The colt reared up on his hind legs, pawing at the air with his front hooves. "Rawr! I'm the fiercest dragon in all the land! No knight can defeat me!"
There was something oddly familiar about the colt—something in the shape of his eyes, the set of his jaw. Comet couldn't quite place it, but he felt an inexplicable connection to this young unicorn from what was clearly the distant past.
The filly lunged forward, tapping the colt gently on the shoulder with her stick. "I have vanquished you, dragon! Surrender!"
The colt collapsed to the ground with theatrical flair, writhing as if in agony. "You have defeated me, brave knight! I surrender to your might, Radiant Hope!"
Radiant Hope. The name echoed in Comet's mind, triggering an intuition he couldn't explain.
The filly giggled, helping her friend back to his hooves. "You played a good dragon today, Sombra. Much more fearsome than last time."
Sombra.
The name hit Comet like a physical blow. That innocent-looking colt with the bright smile and playful demeanor was King Sombra? The tyrant who had enslaved the Crystal Empire, the monster who had cursed its citizens to forget their own identities? It seemed impossible—yet there he was, looking nothing like the shadow-wreathed figure of nightmare that had pursued them across the frozen wastes.
