The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of Ponyville Schoolhouse, casting long golden rectangles across the wooden floor. Miss Cheerilee stood before her class, her mane neatly styled as always, a bright smile on her face as she tapped her pointer against the chalkboard.
"And that, my little ponies, brings us to your next assignment!" she announced with characteristic enthusiasm. The classroom filled with a mixture of groans and excited murmurs. "As we've been studying Equestria's geography and history this month, I'd like each of you to research a historical landmark in our wonderful country."
Cheerilee turned to the board and wrote in her neat hoofwriting: Historical Landmarks of Equestria - Research Project.
"You'll need to write a report about your chosen landmark and prepare a short presentation for the class. I want you to cover its history, its cultural importance, and any interesting facts you discover." Her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she continued, "This is your chance to become explorers of Equestria's rich heritage!"
Apple Bloom raised a hoof. "Miss Cheerilee, can we work in pairs?"
"Excellent question, Apple Bloom. Yes, you may work alone or with a partner," Cheerilee responded, prompting several foals to exchange excited glances. "Just remember, if you work with a partner, I expect twice the effort and detail!"
As Cheerilee handed out worksheet guides for the project, the classroom buzzed with excitement. Foals began whispering to each other about potential landmarks they could research.
"I call Canterlot Castle!" Diamond Tiara announced loudly.
"We're doing the Crystal Empire!" Sweetie Belle declared, gesturing to herself and Button Mash.
Scootaloo leaned across the aisle toward Rumble. "Hey, want to team up? I was thinking Manehattan's Bridleway district would be awesome."
Rumble nodded enthusiastically. "That sounds cool! My brother took me there once, and they have this huge theater called the Hippodromon!"
Pipsqueak sat at his desk, practically bouncing with excitement, his patched coat and brown spots making him easy to spot among his classmates. His eyes were wide with possibilities, a pencil already clutched in his hoof as he scribbled notes furiously.
Beside him, Dinky Doo stared at her blank worksheet with furrowed brows, her light blonde mane falling into her golden eyes. Unlike her enthusiastic classmate, she seemed completely lost, her pencil untouched on her desk.
"Remember, this project is due two weeks from now on." Cheerilee reminded them. "I want you all to present your findings with visual aids. Be creative! Make models, draw pictures, create maps—whatever helps bring your landmark to life for your classmates."
The school bell rang moments later, signaling the end of the day. "Class dismissed! Don't forget your worksheets and have a wonderful afternoon!" Cheerilee called as foals began gathering their saddlebags and heading for the door in a cheerful commotion.
Pipsqueak quickly packed his things and trotted over to Dinky's desk, practically skipping with excitement.
"Dinky! Do you know what you're going to write about?" the patched colt asked, his Trottingham accent giving his words a distinctive lilt that still stood like a sore thumb.
Dinky sighed, stuffing her blank worksheet into her saddlebag. "Nope. I was thinking about Canterlot or Manehattan but Diamond Tiara already claimed Canterlot, and Rumble and Scootaloo are doing Manehattan. I don't want any bad blood between us by picking the same places."
"So... what will we be writing about?" Dinky asked, pulling herself from her thoughts as they walked out of the schoolhouse together.
"Horseshoe Bay Lighthouse," Pip replied with a proud smile, as if he'd just announced they would be researching the royal palace itself.
