Origin: Romania

Deep in the woods outside Cluj-Napoca lies the infamous Hoia Baciu Forest, known to many as "Romania's Bermuda Triangle." While ghost hunters and paranormal tourists are often drawn to tales of glowing orbs, strange disappearances, and electronic interference, there's a more obscure and unsettling legend told only by locals and whispered by forest guides.

A strange clearing near the center of the woods, where nothing grows, is known as the Singing Grove.

From above, it appears to be a perfect circle, no trees, no underbrush, not even moss, just a patch of bare earth surrounded by dense, crooked trunks. While scientists have visited the area to measure radiation, electromagnetic fields, and soil composition, no logical explanation has ever been found. But locals don't speak of radiation.

They say the ground itself sings.

Stories of the Singing Grove go back centuries, passed down through oral folklore from peasants who lived near the edges of the forest. According to these tales, the circular clearing was once a place of sacrifice, not by humans, but by the forest itself.

As the story goes, centuries ago, there was a small village that stood at the edge of Hoia Baciu. One harsh winter, when food was scarce and wolves roamed close, the villagers heard a voice singing from the forest. It wasn't human, but sweet and sorrowful, like a mother mourning a lost child.

Desperate and enchanted, the villagers followed the voice deep into the woods. They were never seen again.

Come spring, their homes stood empty. Where they were last tracked, a perfect clearing had formed, and trees had receded overnight. Animals avoided the spot. No birds sang above it. No grass grew. Just the soft hum of the forest's lullaby, heard only at dusk or during full moons.

Some say it was the forest absorbing them, or the earth marking a place where no life could grow again.

Once, a shepherd reportedly vanished inside the grove while gathering lost sheep. His flock returned alone. His body was never recovered, but searchers noted that their compass needles spun wildly near the grove.

Another time, a group of researchers spent the night inside the circle with electromagnetic sensors and recording equipment. At 3:12 a.m., all equipment failed simultaneously, and a high-pitched hum filled the air for 90 seconds. The team's lead scientist later withdrew from public life entirely and refused to discuss the incident.

In 2016, a local teen live-streaming from the grove during a lunar eclipse claimed to hear soft music, faint flutes or bells, though no one else could hear it. His stream abruptly ended with a burst of static. He was found at dawn, asleep in the middle of the grove, unharmed but mute. He regained speech days later but would only say: "They were not for me."

Villagers in nearby communities like Baciu and Someșeni believe the grove is a "place between worlds." It's neither cursed nor haunted, but sensitive, a thin place where the veil between realities is weak. They speak of it the way one speaks of a grave: respectfully, quietly, and never at night.

Some believe the singing is a lure, a siren-like call used by the forest to claim those who are lost, vulnerable, or broken. Others say it's a memorial, an echo of every soul who stepped into the grove and never left.

Children are warned never to go near the grove, especially if they hear music or laughter. As one saying goes:

"If the forest sings, it sings for you. And if it sings for you, run."

People who visit the place often report nausea and dizziness near the grove. They feel "watched" or "followed" inside the forest. Sudden emotional shifts - laughter turning to weeping, or unprovoked panic. There are also reports of time distortions: watches that stop, missing hours, or identical dreams shared among separate visitors

No two visits are ever the same.

If you ever visit Hoia Baciu Forest and find the clearing, listen closely.

But never sing back.
