"You would have left everyone there on the edge, not knowing what happened to you!" I snapped at him for the second or third time. Cry only snorted in front of me, hobbling along and holding the flashlight. "You would have left us, and for what, a picture of your mother?"
I wasn't sure when the bickering started, but it wasn't long after waking. Cry insisted that we move, that we get going immediately. He took the flashlight and led the way as I woke up, and I started nagging him about being easy on his leg which he took offense to, seeing it as me calling him weak. He probably felt more like a burden, but he only snapped back at me, leading into endless hours of arguing. We were still going now, and it was only growing worse by the second.
"This picture is the last bit of my birth family that I hold onto." Cry had stopped, whipping around to glare at me. "Don't you fucking dare insult her." My mouth twisted in anger as he returned to walk, stomping along.
"I'm not trying to insult her, I'm trying to get it through your thick head that this was a stupid idea. Had you not gone back we wouldn't be stuck here, you wouldn't be injured, and we would all be safe. We could leave, go back out into the wild, I could teach you what I know!" I explained, trying to his my own anger as I spoke. Cry only snorted again.
"Yeah, that sounds real nice to someone who's not from the city. Let me tell you a couple things. First of all, I do not go anywhere without my mother. This is all I have left of her, and goddammit I'm going to keep her with me wherever I go. Secondly, I didn't ask you to come alone!" Cry reminded me sharply. "If you had stayed with everyone else and read the fucking note, you would be safe and wouldn't have to worry."
"Oh yes, because sitting back with everyone else as the one person I love is trapped under a fucking building and can't get his leg out of a pile of rubble is much better than this. I wouldn't worry about anything, because you'd be just fine on your own, right?" I shouted back, and Cry only hissed in front of me.
"I would have been fine, you wouldn't have to worry. I can do things on my own, I led a fucking gang in a city full of them and managed to come out on top. I can make decisions, I'm intelligent enough, alright? You don't have to remind me that the decisions that I make are stupid. I'm well aware that I made a mistake, but leave me alone about it," he sounded almost defeated and I shook my head. This arguing was making me feel sick overall, but I couldn't wrap my head around it still.
I understood that his mother was important to him, and I could respect that. I would have to. The only thing that I didn't get was why he wouldn't have told me about it. It seemed like everything up until this point was shared between us, we had nothing to hide and if one of us had done something stupid we would inform the other. That's how I cheated death the first time when Cry took me in. If he had died out in this city while I waited with everyone else, hanging onto a note; my throat closed.
"Could you understand how I feel?" I whispered out, and Cry stiffened at the tone of my voice, straining to get it past my lips. "I would have been so lost without you. I've never looked at the world the same since the first night you came out to meet me. It's all been changed. If you had died when I wasn't there, I would die inside. I never would have made it back outside happily." My words were hoarse, and I could barely get them past me.
"Felix-." Cry began, turning to me but I held up a hand to stop him.
"Maybe you don't get it." I told him. "I feel something for you, something strong that I can't comprehend, and I thought I made that clear the night that you let me become yours. I thought that you would get it by now, I would be dead if it wasn't for you. I'd be dead without you." I stormed towards him, grabbing his free hand not holding his walking pipe and holding it against my chest as my heart fluttered frantically. "This is how I feel every time you look at me, every time you kiss me. Every time I wake up and remember that I'm yours, and I don't have to worry because you'll protect me." His eyes were glassy as he looked at me.
