"Pewdie, have you not noticed how much worse it's been today?" Covert hissed at me, and I looked up at him, confused. I took a second to look around, and to listen, and sure enough it seemed as though everyone was talking about me. Not just me, I heard Cry's name thrown around several times as well. "Pewdie, I have a feeling that Michael has finally caught on. If you had planned on ducking out anytime soon, now would be a good time." I nodded, staring blankly at my breakfast.
I had been planning on sneaking over to Cry's HQ anyway. I hadn't seen him in a couple of days, and I wanted to ask him if he would let me into his gang. I knew that there were strict rules about leaving my own, but I knew that when push came to shove, Cry would look out for me, wouldn't he? Now, the whispers and the conspiracies about me were getting worse, and with Michael on the edge of losing his mind, this building that was my safe haven felt more and more like a torture chamber every day. It could only get worse from here, and even Covert was powerless to help me.
"Pewdiepie!" the angered shout came from across the lobby, and I turned from my booth to see and enraged Michael standing there, face red and body stiff. Everyone looked from him to me, and I looked back at Covert in horror. My heart began pounding against my chest, and Covert froze, mid puff of his cigarette; he clenched his fist. "Get over here, now. We have some discussing to do." I stood up, gulping, and Covert wrapped a hand around my wrist quickly.
"If it gets out of hand, I'll be there in two seconds," he told me, and I nodded. I walked over to Michael, hoping that he wouldn't do what I thought he was about to in front of everyone. Yet, I was disappointed as he stood to full height, completely enraged. I noticed that his Second was out on the scout mission that had been sent awhile ago, and realized this was why he was losing it. No one was here to keep an eye on him, contain him. He had bags under his eyes, a curl in his lip, he looked like he'd died and got back up, and smelled awful. He really was losing his shit, and this scared me.
"I've received some.. information, if you will." Michael began, grinning wildly. The room had gone silent, everyone's breakfasts untouched as he started speaking. "Someone hasn't been very loyal, have they?" His grin turned into a scowl as his Second returned, panting and rushed. "What is it now?" he demanded, and his Second straightened, a hand on his chest to steady himself.
"John is on the border with a fighting force, very angry. He demands your presence there," he explained, and Michael's eyes widened. He turned to me, and he groaned, hanging his head.
"Alright, gather whatever troops are battle fit, and make sure our friend Pewdie joins the group," he grinned at me, and I felt fear shoot through me. "We'll finish this later tonight." The way that he was talking, I had a feeling that I wasn't going to make it through the day. I needed to get out, escape now while I still could, but the Second, despite being confused, understood Michael's urgency and kept me in the group, herded inwards. Covert joined me, anger filling him as we moved out towards the old Grouping Building.
"I'm dead tonight." I whispered, and the older man shook his head.
"I won't allow it."
"You can't stop it."
"Try to make me." Covert snorted, looking down at me. "Goddammit, I'm not the only one who needs you. This city needs you, you said it yourself. On top of that, if you die, everything will go to hell." I gave him a confused look, and he rolled his eyes. "You think Cry is just gonna let him off for doing something like that? Cry will walk into our HQ and straight up eliminate Michael's gang without even asking questions. Then he burn the building to the ground." I shivered at the thought of Cry murdering more people, and shook my head as we ran. Sure enough, we met up with John on the border, and he had quite the formidable fighting force.
