There had been tension amongst the ranks of our group ever since Cry had showed us up that afternoon. Michael had kept scout patrols up more than ever, and we were creating as much weaponry as we could without depleting our supplies to a dangerous level. Most of us were exhausted with the excessive amounts of work that we were being put through, some of us waking in the middle of the night when extra people were needed. It had been a long couple of days, and I had barely managed to drag myself out of bed this morning.
"Felix, you'll be going on the midday patrol. I need another man on the group that I can trust to head towards the Grouping Building. I don't trust Cry." Michael's order shouted through the ranks of soldiers, and I froze. Was he doing this on purpose, or was he simply stupid? Everyone else who turned and shot me strange looks seemed to have taken notice of Cry's apparent interest in me. It was probably a bad idea to be trusting me to go and confront him of all the troops he could have picked. Surely there was someone more experienced and willing to fight the masked man that could take my place.
I walked forward in attempt to get his attention, but with a clap of his hands and a universal shout from the rest of the group, everyone walked off to do what they were told. I stood there, my mouth slightly agape as the group dispersed and I was left alone with one of the chefs who handed me a tray of food and ushered me towards a table.
Sitting by myself was kind of lonely. Most people had returned to their rooms, or gone out as they were asked. I was not a morning person, so naturally everyone else had eaten and I was usually last to the punch anyway. On top of that, most people didn't like me. I was "outside trash" as some had labelled me. Most of the members had been born right here in this building, and because I wasn't it made me a target for their harassment. Sometimes, when I thought about it, it made me laugh. For instance, if some wild animal decided to roam into the city, they probably would just shoot it, and depending on the animal that might be their downfall. Those inside cities had a lot they could learn from those outside, and vice versa. If only the people in the cities weren't so damn arrogant.
I finished up my meal, wandering back up the stairs and into my room. I pulled on a pair of cleaner cargo pants, and laced up a pair of boots. I found a shirt that was a small bit less dirty than my other ones, and pulled that over my head. My jacket went over that, and I ran a hand through my hair. I wasn't sure if I was ready to risk running into that masked man for fear of praising his smarts in front of my own group. He had gone about his business in the most intelligent way despite blatantly stealing from us, and it was hard not to admire his work. It was probably the reason that Michael got so angry about the ordeal itself; pure jealousy.
I made my way back downstairs a little while later, spending some time to tidy up the little room that I called my own. I was kind of a neat freak some might say, and my personal living space was important. I tagged along with the other people Michael ordered I go with, and found myself jogging at the back of the group.
I didn't fit in real well with any of the soldiers in the gang. They were all hotheaded and arrogant like Michael, and it just wasn't my style. I didn't feel the need to act such a way, and personally I found kindness was a much better route to use. Maybe this was why Cry never left my mind. The masked man had been occupying my thoughts a bit too much, and I had noticed that Michael was the only person he treated with disdain.
Whether it was just how he acted around me or whether Cry was actually quite benevolent I wasn't sure. Anyone in my group would tell me that Cry was simply an asshole on the other side of the border that stole everything from us, although no one would ever elaborate. Anytime I saw him outside of our group he seemed to be kind, treated anyone he spoke to with respect and his eyes behind his mask always shown. I think they were blue, but I wasn't sure.
