Chapter 2: Meeting the Pests, One Mature Cousin, and My 'Frenemy'
The worst smell on earth interrupted my dream. The most 'beautiful' sight when you wake up in the car is not your cousin's butt.
"Yuck! Get off of me, you... dum-dum!" I screamed.
I couldn't help it! It was just ultimately gross to have a kid fart on your face. My cousin giggled and ran out, high-fiving his twin. I growled and unbuckled my seatbelt.
"You won't get away with that, pests." I said screaming once again.
I ran out of the car, screaming revenge, until two strong hands gripped my shoulders.
"What do you think you're doing, gripping my shoulders with your claws?" I said spinning around. My voice hitched when I saw the hot guy who freakishly resembled my aunt.
"I'm Owen, your cousin." he said nervously, with a hint of excitement in his voice. He ran his hand through his hair and shyly half-smiled.
"I'm Alya, your cousin too. Glad to finally meet someone mature."
"Agreed. Why don't we get you inside so I could show you your room?" Owen said.
We both walked up the path and to the door. As Owen opened the door, a bucket of cold water poured down.
"Roar!!!" That's it I've had enough with these kids (even though it's only been a while since I've met them). I chased them down a pretty hallway, into a beautifully decorated living room, and into the kitchen, which had colorful mosaic walls. Then, BAM! I crashed into a wall of muscle. That muscle wall would be belong to the cousin of mine named Owen.
I asked, "May I please go to the bathroom? You need to move out of my way."
"What for?" he asked.
"I have to go the bathroom to open the chamber of secrets." I said sarcastically.
"Okay..."
"Move out of my way!"
"Fine. I'm not going to face the wrath of Alya." He finally moved, allowing me to search for the bathroom in the big maze of a house. When I found the bathroom, I dried myself off and wandered into a bedroom which luckily happened to be mine because my suitcase was in it. I whistled my favorite song as I picked out an outfit. After getting dressed, I looked through the closet, to find the most valuable thing ever. A cassette player! Shaking off the odd feeling of familiarity, I pulled it out. I found a whole box of vintage cassettes. The cassette player was dusty, but it could still play my favorites! I started by looking for the letter P in the alphabetically set collection of cassettes. Aha, there it was, Part of the world, from the movie The Little Mermaid.
"Look at this stuff, isn't it neat? Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?" I sang along, mesmerized by the meaning of the words. I valued them and believed in them. The lyrics created a feeling within me like no other song has.
Suddenly the door swung open to reveal a disheveled-looking Owen.
"What happened to you?" I asked curiously.
"Well, I was trying to get the kids under control. Let's just say, I might have gotten fooled by their tricks. They finally went to sleep, phew. Yay!" he said as he did a quick happy dance and sat down right next to me.
"Did you live the wrath of the twins? I mean, of course you're alive, but are you okay? Like no cuts, bruises, bloody knees?" I asked just to make sure he was really okay.
"No, I died a few times." he said feigning sadness.
I truly laughed for the first time in a few days or even weeks. I never knew I had a cousin that could make me laugh and be so happy all at once. I haven't met him for almost eight years and seeing him now, it's pretty surprising.
