Madison's POV
The first time I saw her, she was dragging a cart of supplies behind her and had two armless walkers chained up like pets.
It was... insane. But kind of badass. Everyone froze when she came out of the woods. Rick raised his gun before she even got within twenty feet. Carl was right behind him, the baby in his arms.
I stood at the edge of the group, heart pounding. I didn't know if we were about to welcome someone in — or bury someone else.
But then I saw the sword strapped across her back, her eyes dark and unreadable, and I felt something shift in my chest.
She looked like how I felt inside. Tired. Quiet. Dangerous if pushed.
Her name was Michonne.
That was all she gave us at first.
She didn't talk much. Didn't smile either. But there was something in the way she watched everyone — calm, alert — like she was constantly reading the room. Calculating.
I got that.
She stuck close to Rick at first. Only answered questions when necessary. When Daryl asked where she came from, all she said was, "Far enough."
Blake didn't like her. Not at first.
"Something's off," he muttered to me one night, while we were on watch duty. "She's hiding something."
"She's still here, though," I said. "That means something."
He glanced at me like he was surprised I'd spoken up. I guess I surprised myself too.
⸻
It didn't happen overnight. But slowly, I started finding my way back into conversations.
Carol offered me soup one night and I actually sat down with her to eat it. It was awkward. Silent for the first few minutes. But she didn't push.
Carl asked me to hold the baby while he helped Rick clean a weapon. I didn't hesitate.
I even smiled — really smiled — when Beth told me Judith had started making tiny cooing sounds.
It wasn't that the grief had disappeared. It hadn't. Shane's ghost still followed me through the halls. Lori's death still made my stomach twist when I passed the medical ward.
But I wasn't pretending anymore. I was trying. And for the first time in months, the others were trying too.
Hershel asked my opinion about the garden. Glenn joked about my terrible aim. Maggie offered to let me read with her in the mornings.
They didn't say they'd forgiven me. But they didn't have to.
They were letting me be here again.
⸻
Michonne opened up one afternoon. Just me and her and the wind scraping through the empty yard.
"I've been watching you," she said bluntly.
I raised an eyebrow. "Uh... thanks?"
She gave the smallest twitch of a smile. "You've seen things. Same as me."
I didn't respond.
"You ever hear of a place called Woodbury?"
The name sounded fake. Like something out of a storybook.
"No," I said carefully. "What is it?"
She hesitated. "Town. With walls. Clean water. Electricity."
I laughed, but it came out bitter. "Sounds like bullshit."
"It's real. I was there." She looked away. "Didn't stay long."
"Why?"
"Because the man who runs it," she said, voice dropping low, "smiles too easily."
My stomach twisted.
"What's his name?"
"I don't say it. But you'll hear it soon enough."
And that was the end of that conversation.
⸻
I sat beside Blake on the catwalk again. Our spot. The only place that felt like ours.
"They're talking to me again," I said quietly.
He smiled into the dark. "I noticed."
"Feels... weird."
"You deserve to be here, Maddie. You never stopped."
I didn't say anything. Just leaned my head against his shoulder and closed my eyes.
"I heard Michonne mention something," he added. "A man. Some town."
I nodded. "She didn't say his name. But whatever she saw scared her."
Blake shifted. "You think it's coming?"
"I think something is."

And far beyond the fences
Somewhere out there, beyond the woods, past the walkers and smoke and silence, a man named Philip Blake — known only as The Governor — stared at a map with the prison circled in red ink.
He'd heard about the place. About Rick. About the girl who carried herself like fire and ash.
And he was curious.
