Madison's POV
I'd seen what it looked like when someone unraveled.
Not just grief — real, bone-deep spiraling. I'd lived it.
And now I saw it happening to Rick.
Not loudly, not all at once.
But in little ways.
The way his eyes stayed too long on the ground where Lori died.
The way he didn't respond when Carl asked him a question the first time.
The way he still spoke to her. Not in prayer, but in conversation.
I didn't judge him for it.
I just... knew the signs. The quiet crumbling.
And I wasn't going to let him go under. Not like I did.
So I watched him. Closely. Quietly. Kept Judith close to him. Tried to make sure Carl didn't notice.
Because if Rick fell, everything would fall with him.
⸻
Daryl was supposed to come.
So was Blake.
But something about the fence needing reinforcement made Rick switch things around last minute.
So it was just me, Maggie, and Glenn. A supply run. Close by. Nothing unusual.
We found canned goods in an old gas station, and I cracked a joke about how I'd kill for powdered donuts.
Glenn laughed.
Maggie smiled.
It felt almost normal.
Right up until we opened the back door and walked straight into the trap.
Three men. Armed. Masks. The Governor's people.
I went for my knife — didn't even hesitate — but a rifle butt slammed into my temple before I could blink.
The world spun sideways.
I hit the ground.
⸻
When I woke up, the room was cold. Damp. Smelled like sweat and rot.
Glenn was tied to a chair across from me. Bloody lip. Black eye.
Maggie was gone.
"Where is she?" I rasped. My head throbbed like someone had cracked it open and poured fire inside.
"They took her," he whispered. "Said they wanted to 'talk.'"
Footsteps echoed beyond the door. Then silence.
Then screaming.
Maggie's voice.
I didn't think. I screamed her name.
But no one came.
⸻
Hours passed.
Maggie was dropped back in, shaking, pale, eyes hollow.
She wouldn't speak.
I held her while she shook. Glenn was crying — silent, dry sobs, his hands still tied.
I made myself a promise right then:
If they tried that again — I'd take her place.
So when they came back the next morning and reached for Maggie again, I stood up first.
"Take me."
They paused.
"She's had enough. You want answers? Take me."
The man looked confused, but he radioed in.
Minutes later, they hauled me into a different room.
There was a chair in the center.
And the Governor sitting in the shadows, sipping whiskey like we were at a damn dinner party.
⸻
I didn't scream.
Not at first.
I kept thinking of Shane. Of Blake. Of the way Carl hugged Judith like she was a lifeline.
I kept thinking of the Governor's eyes — cold, curious, detached — like I was just a puzzle to be solved or broken.
He asked questions.
I gave lies.
He didn't like that.
He threatened.
He touched my face.
He pressed.
My armor cracked, but I didn't break. Not all the way.
Not yet.
⸻
After
They dumped me back into the room like trash.
Maggie caught me before I hit the ground.
Glenn shouted until his throat bled, still tied to that damn chair.
My voice was gone.
I didn't cry.
I just stared at the wall until it stopped spinning.
⸻
Back at the prison, Blake paced outside the cell block, his hands shaking.
"They should've been back hours ago," he said to Rick. "Something's wrong."
Daryl grabbed his crossbow.
Rick finally stood up, jaw set. "We go at first light."
Carl sat on the steps, staring at the road.
Judith babbled in Beth's arms.
Michonne already had her sword strapped across her back.
They didn't know what we were walking into.
They didn't know that part of me might not come back at all.
But I hoped Blake would still see me.
Even when I couldn't see myself.
