Madison's POV
We'd been walking for hours, maybe days. I couldn't tell anymore. Every tree started to look the same. Every step felt like we were dragging the past with us. One foot after another, like if we kept moving we wouldn't have to stop and remember what we lost.
I didn't cry when the prison fell. I couldn't. My body hadn't had the strength left to grieve. It was like someone had reached inside me and flipped a switch. And now all I had was Judith on my chest and a knife in my hand.
The others walked ahead in silence—Rick, Carl, Michonne, Blake just a few paces behind. None of us said much unless we had to. Even Blake, who could always make me laugh when the world felt bleakest, kept to himself. He was quiet in a different way now. Protective. Watchful. I hadn't slept more than an hour since we left the prison, but I didn't feel tired.
Not in the usual sense. Just... heavy.
Carl kicked at a rock, muttering something under his breath. Rick reached back and laid a hand on his shoulder. I watched them, trying to read Rick's expression. He was still Rick, still the man I once admired with everything in me—but something in him had changed after the prison. Like he was walking around with a ghost in his chest too.
Judith stirred in the sling I'd tied across my chest. She was safe. Somehow, still safe. Carol had saved her and handed her back without a word. I didn't cry then either.
I felt like if I cried once, I might not stop.
"We're close," Blake said softly, falling into step beside me.
I nodded. "Yeah."
Ahead, a sign appeared on the tracks. Big letters. Fresh paint.
TERMINUS. SANCTUARY FOR ALL. COMMUNITY FOR ALL.
It should've felt like hope. But it didn't.
⸻
By late afternoon, the woods thinned. Birds scattered from the trees as we crossed over a rusted rail bridge, Rick's hand gripping his gun so tight I could see the veins in his knuckles.
Then—voices.
A flash of movement in the clearing ahead.
Rick stopped dead in his tracks, raising his hand for silence. I instinctively moved in front of Judith, hand at my knife.
More voices.
Then a familiar drawl.
"Rick?"
My breath caught.
No—it couldn't be.
"Daryl?" Rick said back.
The trees parted like curtains, and there he was. Filthy, bearded, alive.
And not alone.
Carol stepped out next, holding a rifle. Then Tyreese. Then Sasha.
And then—Daryl's eyes landed on us.
Blake stepped forward before I could stop him.
"Daryl?"
Daryl didn't say anything. He crossed the clearing in five long strides and pulled Blake into a rough, desperate hug. "You little shit," he muttered into Blake's shoulder. "Thought you were dead."
Blake laughed, but it was raw. "You too."
I blinked back a sting in my eyes. That hug did something to me. Like watching two parts of the world reconnect.
Carol approached me slowly. Her eyes dropped to Judith. I thought she might cry.
"She's okay," I whispered, voice cracking for the first time in days. "Because of you."
