Rose's POV
"For God's sake Annie, sit still!"
"But it hurts!" She wails.
It was early on a Thursday morning, and I was brushing my little sisters hair, well trying.
"Well would you rather have it hurt, or have to have it all cut off because of all the knots?" Annie sat in silence.
The buzz of the other children surrounds us we get ready. Everyone goes silent when we hear footsteps approach our crowded room. The door slams open and in walks the very drunk Miss Miggins. She stumbles as she makes her way into the room, using a dresser for support.
"Gggg-et in LINE!" She hollers. Everyone quickly obeys, with a stroke of fear in their eyes. One little boy who I didn't recognize was trying to push his way in between 2 older girls who were not budging. Ms. Miggins stumbled her way over to him.
"Hello," she said clasping her hands together and wearing a big cheesy smile on her round face. "And what might your name be?"
"Sammy..." The boy quivered. Miss. Miggins grabbed his cheeks in a loving but painful way.
"Well aren't you just the cutest little thing," she said. She then realized that she had better things to do with her time and shoved the boy to the ground and walked away. She walked back and forth across the line examining each and everyone of us.
"Alright you little muggets, today is adoption day. You're gonna clean this dump, so it looks nicer than the hell hole it is." I later had to explain to Annie what hell was. "Then you will change into your adoption day clothes and go downstairs. You will pretend like you are having the time of your lives, so our guests adopt you little brats and get you outta my hair. Understand?"
"Yes ma'am," we answered in unison.
"Good" she sputtered as she kicked a girl who was a little in front of the line back in it. Once she left, the room exploded into chatter. Everybody was excited of the possibility of being adopted. Everyone except me and Annie. Every adoption day, we watch everybody else get adopted, and nobody even thinking about adopting us. People chat with us of course, but once they learn that we are a package of two and only two, they walk away.
Annie kept saying "Maybe this time," as she does every adoption day to try to cheer us up. I rolled my eyes and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She did the same for me.
After we had completed cleaning the orphanage to the best of our ability, we changed into our adoption clothes. Adoption clothes are the nicest set of clothes you own that you wear on adoption day and when you get adopted. The reason they're the nicest clothes, is because they're the only clothes that actually get washed. I put Annie in her little pink dress and I change into my jeans and a fairly nice t-shirt. We head down stairs with all of the other children. Miss. Miggins is sitting on a couch, wearing the same brown dress she wears every adoption day.
"Well, what are you waiting for? I thought I told you to have the time of your life??!" She yelled. With that everybody started to chat and giggle and prance around. We all got our name tags, which had our names and our ages. We never get new name tags, so every year, we just cross out our old age and put our new one. Me and Annie's had 3 crossed out numbers. Annie is 3 and I am 7.
Our father was the captain of a ship, and on our parents anniversary, they went on the boat for a trip. While they were on their trip, there was a big hurricane that killed them both. Me and Annie were staying with our grandparents. They couldn't handle taking care of us, so they dropped us off at the orphanage and moved to California. Me and Annie have been here ever since.
Annie pulled me into our usual corner with a box in her hand.
"Not the matching game again!" I complain. Annie looks at me with a content look in her eyes.
"Let adoption day... Begin!" Says Miss. Miggins as she daintily opens the door and takes on a new persona. Of course there is nobody there.
