It was Kiela's first day at a new school, and she was nervous. She had never liked transferring in the middle of the year, but her mom had made her switch schools after finding out Kiela was being bullied. Her alarm went off, and she silenced it, staying in bed until she heard a knock on the door a faint 'come in' could be heard from kiela the door opening to reveal her mom.
"Kiela, get up. If you want a ride, you need to get dressed," her mom said before walking out.
Kiela groaned and got up, walking to the bathroom. She turned on the shower and stood there for a moment. The thought of being the new kid made her stomach turn. She shook it off and got into the shower. When she finished, she stepped out, wrapped a towel around her body, and walked to the sink. She washed her face, brushed her teeth, and left the bathroom, heading back to her room. She slipped on her undergarments, moisturized her skin, and got dressed in the outfit she'd picked out the night before a pleated jean skirt, a sweater, her UGGs, and leg warmers.
After getting dressed, she left her curls loose and put on her glasses. She picked up her backpack, applied her perfume, added her jewelry, and looked in the mirror one last time. Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her phone and headed downstairs to meet her mom, who was sitting on the couch watching TV.
"You wanna stop at Starbucks?" her mom asked. Kiela nodded and followed her mom to the car. Her mom tried making conversation, but Kiela only gave short, one word replies or simple noises to show she was listening. They pulled into the drive-thru, and her mom ordered her usual a salted caramel cream cold brew and a cake pop. She handed Kiela her order, and Kiela ate her cake pop while scrolling on her phone. The car eventually came to a stop, and Kiela looked out the window to see her new school. She hesitantly got out of the car, grabbed her drink, told her mom she loved her, and watched as she drove away. Slipping on her headphones, Kiela walked into the school, passing groups of students as she searched for the main office. Once she found it, she walked in and greeted the woman at the front desk.
"Are you Kiela Hayes?" the woman asked, looking between her computer and Kiela. Kiela nodded. The woman handed her a schedule and pointed her toward her first class.
"Thank you," Kiela said softly. She picked up her coffee and followed the instructions to her classroom. When she walked in, a few students were already there. She walked up to the teacher's desk, threw away her empty coffee cup, and waited for him to acknowledge her.
"Can I help you?" the teacher asked, giving her a questioning look.
"It's my first day. I was wondering where I should sit," Kiela replied.
The teacher stood up, looked around the room, then pointed to a seat all the way in the back.
"You can sit next to Dee the tall one in the back," he said, motioning toward the guy sitting on top of a desk talking to his friends. Kiela walked to the seat and sat down, grabbing a piece of gum from her bag and getting on her phone. The bell rang, and more students began filing in, the room growing louder. The bell rang again, and the teacher walked over to close the door only to be cut off by a student slipping past him with a hoodie on. The teacher pulled the student's hoodie down, revealing his face. The student walked over and sat in front of Kiela, engaging in conversation with his friends. She wasn't paying much attention until she noticed him pointing in her direction, prompting her to look up.
"Who's you?" he asked, looking directly at her.
"Kiela," she replied quickly and briefly, then looked away. He nodded and turned back toward her.
"Well, I'm Adot. That's Dee, Bloodie, and Dudeylo," he said, pointing at a different person with each name.
"Nice to meet you," she said, still avoiding eye contact.
"Youn talk much, do you?" he asked. Kiela shook her head. He was about to speak again when the teacher cut him off.
"Is there something you'd like to share with the class?" the teacher asked, looking between Adot and Kiela. The rest of the class turned to stare, some lingering longer than others, making her look down.
"Nah, you can keep teaching," Adot said casually, and the class turned back toward the front. The rest of the period dragged. The clock seemed to move in slow motion. Eventually, Kiela took off her glasses and laid her head down, falling asleep until she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up, squinting, and saw the teacher looking at her. She sat up as he placed a paper in front of her and walked back to his desk. Kiela put her glasses back on to see a simple math worksheet in front of her. It didn't take her long to finish, and she got up to turn it in. Then she returned to her desk, pulled out her phone, and scrolled until the bell rang.
She grabbed her backpack and rushed out of the classroom, looking at her schedule to find her next class. While walking and looking down at the paper, she suddenly bumped into someone.
"What the fuck watch—" the person started, before stopping. Kiela looked up and mentally facepalmed seeing the same boy from her previous class.
