"I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention," Kiela spoke quickly, not making eye contact with him.

"You good, Kiela, right?" he asked, pointing at her. She nodded, wishing this conversation would end already.

"You need help finding your classes?" he asked, causing Kiela to look up. He looked genuine or at least Kiela thought he did.

"Yeah, that'd be nice," she said. He put his hand out for her schedule, and she handed it to him. He read through it and handed it back. She grabbed it and looked up at him.

"Kiela Hayes, we have your first three classes together, and your last ones are all on the same floor. But I'll walk you to all of them," he said, throwing his arm over Kiela as he chatted away while walking her to their classes. Kiela let out a few laughs here and there. When they got to class, he went to his seat, and Kiela went up to the teacher, who greeted her with a smile.

"Are you my new student?" the teacher asked, smiling Kiela nodded.

"Great! You can have a seat next to him in the black hoodie." She turned to look, seeing Adot waving at her. She walked to her seat and sat down. The classroom started to fill up with students. The teacher stood in front of the class and called Kiela to the front. She walked up and stood next to the teacher, who placed a hand on her shoulder.

"This is our new student, Kiela. Everyone, give her a warm welcome," the teacher said, smiling. Kiela gave a small smile, and the teacher patted her back, sending her back to her seat. Kiela pulled out her notebook, and Adot tapped her shoulder. She turned to look at him.

"So, Kiela, why'd you transfer here?" he asked, genuinely confused.

"I moved," she shrugged, lying. He nodded and didn't push the question further. The teacher started the lesson, and they both paid attention, taking notes. A little while later, the teacher paused and left the room to take a phone call. Once the teacher was gone, students got loud. A girl walked over to Kiela, standing in front of her desk.

"Hi, Kiela. Do you know someone named Brooklyn?" the girl said sinisterly, while the two girls behind her laughed.

Brooklyn was the reason she switched schools, but she didn't think anyone here would know about her. Brooklyn bullied Kiela through freshman and sophomore year. One day, Brooklyn went too far she followed Kiela home, poured milk on her, and let her friends kick and pull her hair while she recorded . That incident led Kiela to switch schools.

"Yeah, why?" Kiela said, looking between the three girls who were laughing among themselves.

"No reason. Just wondering," the girl said before walking away. She gave Kiela and Adot one last glance before sitting back down.

"Who's Brooklyn?" Adot whispered, leaning closer to Kiela.

"Just some girl I used to know," she said, just as the teacher came back into the classroom. The teacher apologized and resumed the lesson. Later, the bell rang, and Kiela and Adot packed up their things, walking to their next class together. She saw the same girl walk past her, looking her up and down. Kiela chose to ignore it and focused on whatever Adot was talking about.

They arrived at their class, and Adot dragged her to a seat next to him, explaining that they had a sub. She nodded, and they spent the whole class period getting to know each other. Before she knew it, the class was over, and Adot was walking her to her next class.

"Let me get your phone real quick," he said. Kiela hesitantly pulled out her phone and unlocked it. He took the phone, entered his number, and texted himself.

"So I can let you know when I'm outside," he said before jogging off to get to his class. She went into her next class and went about her day until the bell rang. She started packing up when her phone buzzed with a message from an unsaved number that read I'm outside.

She knew it was Adot. She grabbed her backpack and went outside to meet him. He continued talking to her as they walked to the lunchroom. He led her to a table full of guys, and they sat down.

"Y'all, this is Kiela. Kiela, that's Boogz and Mizzy, and you met those three already," he said, pointing at the other two. She nodded and waved, and they greeted her. The boys shared conversation and included Kiela whenever she responded. She slowly began to feel more comfortable with the group of six. The school day continued as normal and eventually ended. Kiela was at the front of the school, sitting on a bench waiting for her mom, when Adot walked up and sat next to her.

"You waiting on your mom?" he asked. Kiela nodded and smiled slightly.

"My bad dumb question. But how was your first day?" he asked.

"It was pretty okay. Went different than I expected," she said, slightly laughing. They kept talking until they saw a car pull up. Kiela stood and hugged Adot goodbye before getting into the car.

"Do you need a ride home?" her mom asked through the rolled-down window, talking to Adot. Kiela slid down in her seat, embarrassed.

"No, ma'am, I'm walking with my friends. Thank you, though," he said, waving at Kiela and her mom. Kiela's mom waved back and drove off. While they were stopped at a red light, her mom turned to her.

"So, who's that?" her mom asked with a smile.

"He's just a classmate," Kiela replied, turning to her mom. Her mom gave her a side eye before turning back to the road and driving home. Once she got home, her mom dropped her off. Kiela went inside and into the kitchen to grab a snack. Her phone pinged with a message from a group chat.
