Jacob
Three hours ago...
Evelyn perched on Leo's couch, digging through the books they'd borrowed from his library. Leo was out buying groceries to get his mind off the imminent danger, but he'd left them to do their thing.
Jacob couldn't wash his antsy feeling away. The past few days had been stressful, and he couldn't help but feel he was losing control of everything. The twins saw more than he did, and Wilder was acting all shifty and weird and less willing to go along with Jacob's plans. Roxanne had told him once, to "let the ladies handle it." That this didn't involve him. But psychic help was his entire job, and who was he without it? Of course he had to meddle, it was practically an instinct.
His secret theory with Evelyn was that Kalyani and Aria were connected to Roxanne someway. They ruled out being relatives, considering that their family trees diverged severely. So what else could it be? Roxanne had made a deal with an inhuman entity to murder her family, and inhuman spirits typically latched onto objects. Even if the demon was long gone, Roxanne was still reaping its benefits. So there was obviously something in the twins' possession that was keeping her there. Jacob just had to figure out what.
His sister was scouring through the Roxanne case files again, attempting to find some object of significance. Jacob, meanwhile, revisited Morgan Wesner's family tree online. Something about it was bothering him, how everything cut off at Sarah Wesner in books.
But Sarah Wesner had to have been middle-aged by now. Some website must have updated to include her kids or cousins or anything. Jacob, while putting on a solid front, didn't actually want to sacrifice some random woman. If there was anyone else, anyone expendable who had done something wrong, then. Then that would be justifiable.
Like Andrew. Andrew deserved death for all the shitty things he'd done to Jacob's mother. For what he'd tried to do to Evelyn. Andrew paid because he was a bad person. So why should Sarah Wesner pay for something she hadn't even done? It was Sarah's ancestor, Morgan, who had done wrong. He who should've died before he even reproduced.
Then again, nothing was black and white. Jacob kind of understood, how it would make Roxanne at least feel like justice had been served. She couldn't kill her abuser, so she'd kill the next best thing. But what was stopping her there? She wasn't a simple spirit like the rest. No, she'd been messing with the occult when she was alive. The demonic. Of course she was messed up in the head.
What if she took more people after Sarah? Then what? Jacob had to find what was binding Roxanne and destroy it. That way, she'd be gone for good. Nothing left to cling onto.
Evelyn looked up from her book.
"Earth to Jacob. You're spacing out."
He blinked and shook his head. "Sorry, sorry. I was just feeling well, bad about giving up Sarah. This is a random woman we don't even know, and we're taking her straight into the jaws of the killer."
"This is what we do," Evelyn said quietly. "I feel awful too, but this is for our friends. This sounds real shitty, but I'd rather give up one person than let Roxanne roam free and kill more people. She got Wilder's dad."
"Hey, why did she even get Wilder's dad? Did you ever ask him?"
Evelyn straightened up. "He never wants to talk about it. He said it was an accident. Why, you think Wilder knows something about this?"
"No, but I think his dad might have. I'm just kind of stumped, I mean I don't even get what basis Roxanne is using to choose her victims. I've known that the twins had some type of psychic ability, and things have been getting worse ever since they showed up. Roxanne wants them for a reason. And we're reading all these stupid ass books and we still can't figure it out!"
