"AH, HELLO LOVE, WHAT'S GOT YOU HERE SO EARLY?" Klaus smirked, opening the door to his mansion wider for Blair.

"Is Elijah home?" She said, already moving past him, their shoulders brushing.

Klaus arched a brow at her tone but didn't stop her. "He's in the sitting room. Why you ask?"

She ignored him, crossing the hall until she reached the sitting room.

When Blair stepped into the doorway, he looked up, and there it was again. The smile that had brightened the Mikaelson toast the night before.

"Blair." he said, rising as if to meet her, and for a second she forgot the script she'd rehearsed a dozen ways the night before.

She had rehearsed it until the edges of the words were blunt. Now, face to face with him, every sentence felt too sharp.

"Elijah, hello." she managed.

"Everything all right, love?" He smiled, stepping closer, he placed his hands on her hips and pulled her a bit into himself.

He leaned in to kiss her but Blair dodged it, folding her hands to stop them shaking. "Yeah. I just needed to see you." she said. "I—there's something I have to tell you."

He stepped back, crossing his arms. "Whatever it is, say it."

She swallowed against the ache in her throat. "I can't pretend anymore, Elijah." The words arrived small and brittle. "I can't keep telling you or myself that I can give you what you deserve when I don't know if I ever can."

He simply watched her, expression folding into something softer, as if bracing for cold. "Is this about last night?" he asked quietly. "Did I do something?"

"No, no, you were perfect last night. You always are." She said quickly and looked down at her hands. "It's about what I feel."

Elijah's lip twitched into a small frown. "What do you feel, Blair?" he asked after a moment.

She met his gaze then, because she owed him that. "Elijah I can't keep doing this. I can't keep pretending I can give you what you deserve when my heart—" She swallowed hard. "—isn't all here."

"It's someone else, isn't it?" he asked with disgust. "You like someone else."

"Yes." Blair answered, and she could already hear the difference in herself. How she could say the words without the jaggedness that had kept her silent for months. "I can't explain it. It's messy and wrong and everything I told myself I don't like."

"I respect you too much to lie. You've been nothing but kind, patient, loving—"

"And yet you've been lying to me regardless." he cut in, his voice still calm but edged like glass.
