THE FIRST THING BLAIR FELT WAS THE WARMTH.
Not the sheets, those were cool but the subtle heat of another body behind her. Steady breath, barely touching the curve of her neck. Her eyes fluttered open slowly, and it took her half a second to realize.
Damon's bed again.
She didn't remember falling asleep.
His arm was around her. Barely. Just his hand resting low on her waist, his palm warm even through the thin cotton of her shirt.
Very slowly, Blair began to lift his arm and shift out from beneath it, praying that he's still asleep.
"Why are you trying to sneak out like I'm going to chain you to the mattress?"
His voice was soft and dry, barely above a whisper but it cut straight through the silence like it was made for it.
His voice was different in the morning. Lower, rougher. Like velvet pulled over gravel. Sleep still clung to it, softening his usual sharpness and dragging his words out with a slow, deliberate rhythm.
It was the kind of voice that settled in her bones, curling around her spine and refusing to let go.
"Were you—"
"Awake this whole time? Yeah." Damon nodded.
She rolled her eyes at him and sat up, tugging the sheet up instinctively, even though she was still fully dressed.
Blair glanced over her shoulder at him. He was lying on his back now, eyes open, one hand tucked beneath his head. For once, he looked at peace.
"This is becoming a pattern." she said, forcing a lightness into her voice. "I really need to stop waking up in your bed."
"Then stop falling asleep here."
"You're the one with the ridiculously comfortable furniture."
He raised an eyebrow. "Pretty sure it's not the furniture you come back for."
Blair didn't answer that. She just pulled her legs off the bed and stood, brushing her fingers through her tangled hair as she looked for her shoes.
She just nodded at him once she put her shoes on, and headed for the door.
Right before she stepped out, she paused.
"Bye, friend. Try not to miss me too much."
And just like that, those words made him smirk again, that half-smile that had wrecked so many versions of her before.
