“Happy Pranks Day!”

A chaotic chorus of screams, laughter, and mischief echoed throughout the school as Y/N carefully made his way down the main staircase, dodging everything from flying pies to enchanted whoopee cushions.

“Y/N! Over here!” someone shouted.

He turned instinctively, a mistake because  a warm of water balloons launched through the air in his direction, propelled by telekinesis. But just before they could drench him, the balloons froze mid-flight, suspended in the air.

He turned to see Sadie, the punk-rock drummer girl, standing with her arms extended, fingers twitching slightly. Her powers held the prank in place.

“Watch out!” Y/N shouted, noticing the sudden glow of sparking lights above them. Without thinking, he lunged and shoved her out of the way just as a handful of fireworks exploded right where they had stood.

“Thanks,” Sadie mumbled, her cheeks tinged with a faint blush as Y/N’s hands steadied her.

But just as quickly, he stepped back, clearing his throat. “Yeah…”

“Hey... isn’t that Wednesday?” Sadie asked, pointing toward the courtyard where a short girl dressed in Nevermore’s black uniform was speaking to Principal Dort and Professor Orloff, a disembodied head encased in a glass tank.

“Are you aware of any student or staff member who can control birds?” Wednesday asked, her tone cold and inquisitive.

“You mean, an Avian? Why do you ask?” Professor Orloff replied.

“I’m working on a project about underrepresented Outcasts,” Wednesday answered smoothly, no hesitation in her voice.

“We haven’t had an Avian enrolled in at least… ten years,” Orloff responded, voice distant.

“Well, have fun,” Principal Dort offered with a casual smile, before both adults turned and walked away, leaving Wednesday standing alone with her thoughts.

“Wednesday! Hey, are you okay now?”
Y/N’s voice cut through the quiet as he approached her from behind.

Wednesday turned slowly to face him, her usual blank expression in place. But her eyes flicked, just briefly, to the girl beside him. Sadie stood at his side, arms folded, watching their interaction with a subtle, unreadable look.

For a moment, the two girls locked eyes. The silence between them felt weighted, and it only broke when Y/N leaned in slightly and whispered.

“What happened yesterday… you know, when you cried black tears?”

“It’s fine now,” Wednesday replied flatly, her tone colder than usual.

Y/N frowned. He could tell she was dodging with her voice, her body language, all of it carried secrecy. Wednesday was hiding something. And the worst part was, she didn’t trust him with it.

Sadie cleared her throat, lightly breaking the tension.

“Oh, right,” Y/N said, brightening slightly. “This is Sadie. She’s my bandmate. Well, kind of. We don’t have a name yet, so I guess it’s not really a band.”

“More like a collision of great minds,” Sadie quipped with a smirk, offering her hand to Wednesday.

Wednesday didn’t even glance at it. After a beat, Sadie withdrew her hand awkwardly, brushing it against her skirt with a small, sheepish smile. “Not your type of introduction, huh?”

Wednesday raised a single brow in that slow, deliberate way she did when she was both unimpressed and finished with a conversation. Without a word, she turned on her heel and walked off into the crowd of students.
