Shree’s POV
---
11:45 PM
My eyes kept flicking to the glowing red numbers on the wall clock.
11:45. Just fifteen minutes left for my birthday.
I sat cross-legged on my bed, wearing my favorite oversized T-shirt, hair in a messy bun, phone in hand. The little fairy lights I had strung up in my room months ago were glowing softly, giving the space a cozy feel.
I scrolled aimlessly through Instagram, but my mind wasn’t on the reels. Any second now, my phone should start buzzing.
The first wish should come from Ishqi bhabhi — obviously. Or maybe Veer bhai, though he always tries to act cool about birthdays. And then… my best friends from college. They had to be planning something.
---
11:59 PM
I put my phone down for a second, straightened the bedsheet (don’t ask why — excitement does that to me), and sat ready. One minute to go. My heartbeat picked up.
“Okay, Shree… smile like you’re surprised,” I muttered to myself, practicing.
The clock struck 12:00 AM.
I stared at the phone. No ping.
No knock at the door.
I tilted my head, listening for footsteps. Nothing.
---
12:05 AM
I bit my lip and unlocked my phone. Maybe they’re going to FaceTime me.
Nothing.
The only notification I had was… Zomato telling me about midnight biryani offers with Happy Birthday.
“Wow. Even biryani cares more about me” I muttered sarcastically.
---
12:15 AM
Still nothing. I refreshed WhatsApp twice. My friends’ group was active — someone had just sent a meme about exams. EXAMS! And no one even remembered to wish me.
My excitement fizzled like a soda bottle left open. Maybe they were planning something for tomorrow morning? Maybe?
I hugged my pillow, turned off the fairy lights, and sighed.
---
12:30 AM
I couldn’t hold my eyelids open any longer. I finally drifted off, telling myself, Tomorrow morning they’ll make up for it… right?
---
Morning – 9:00 AM
When I finally woke up, the sunlight was streaming in, warm and cheerful. I stretched, shaking off the heaviness from last night. Maybe everyone was waiting for breakfast to wish me.
