"What?" I shrieked, my eyes widening. Ok, remember how I said that I was only scared of having dinner with Norman? Scratch that. I was terrified of pirates!
"Get her back to her cell and be sure to lock it!" Norman ordered, taking out his sword. That's when I heard the shouts of men, and the clanging of metal swords. I glanced at the sky. It was darkening with clouds. Over the railing of the ship, I saw another set of flags. I started trembling as the sounds of war waged on the deck.
"Now Edward!" Norman shouted, and before I could stop him, he jumped over the railing.
"You heard him Isabelle. Let's go!" Edward exclaimed, grabbing me by the elbow and dragging me towards the cells again.
Even from inside, I could hear the sounds of men yelling and swords clanging against each other. I bit my lip, scared for not only my safety, but for Norman's as well. I flung the cell open, and grabbed my shirt.
"Undo my strings! Now!" I ordered. Edward nodded and started untying my strings. Once my dress was off, I pulled the shirt on again. I turned around, just as Edward was shutting the cell. "Wait! Don't I get a sword?" I demanded.
"There are none to spare. And the captain said to lock up your cell." Edward stated. "With any luck, you won't need a sword."
"But what if I do?" I demanded.
"I'll be here." He muttered, locking the cell. Just as he did, however, a heavy thudding could be heard from upstairs. And it was making its way down. Edward drew his sword just as two heavily built men. When their feet hit the bottom, a loud thunder clap sounded overhead. The two men glared hungrily at us, mostly at me. "Oh fuck." He muttered under his breath.
"What?" I demanded. I didn't like the way his eyes widened.
"Barbarians."
"What?" I repeated. Barbarian?
"Worse than Vikings, stronger then any pirate, and will ravish any women they find." Edward explained.
"What will I do?" I asked, feeling panicked.
"Hopefully nothing." He muttered, just as the barbarians let out blood curdling roars and lunged forward. Edward's brave wall fell, and he started trembling. Without a second thought, he dropped his sword and raced in the opposite direction, leaving me alone.
"Edward!" I shrieked, backing up. One of the barbarians chased after the cowardly Edward, while the other faced my cell. There was a gleam in his eye that I didn't like. They were darkening with something. The barbarian grabbed the cell door handle, and attempted to open it. I let out a scream, hoping that Norman or someone would hear. The giant started jerking at the door, pulling. I heard the creaking of metal as the bars started giving away. Trembling, I glanced around frantically. Maybe these were the type of pirates that the women told stories about. I didn't want to find out.
Tears were starting to stream down my face, and I slammed my eyes shut. There was no way to defend myself. Edward's sword we too far away for me to reach. I was finished.
When the door shattered and was ripped away from its hinges, I screamed again. The barbarian lunged forward, his sword drawn, when I saw something else enter the room with me. Great! Raped by two barbarians! What could possibly be worse?
Suddenly, the barbarian stopped. I barely saw the tip of a sword poke out of his broad chest. The barbarian let out a gurgled cry, and fell to the floor. When it fell, Jack was revealed. He ripped the sword out of the barbarians back, wiping the blood off. Then he reached down, grabbing Edward's sword. Speaking of Edward, I no longer heard his screams of terror.
"You ok, Mi 'Lady?" He demanded, handing me the sword. I nodded, my throat dry. "Take the sword and follow me. Stay close, or else." He ordered, leading me out of the cell area.
The deck was awful. Bodies of barbarians as well as men littered the deck. Blood was pooling everywhere, and the rain pounded heavily on the deck, making it slick. I glanced around frantically for one person.
And there he was.
Norman was sword fighting an enormous barbarian. Each time their swords clashed, sparks flew. Lighting lit up he sky occasionally, and made their shapes black with white outline. Rain plastered Norman's hair to his forehead, while his eyes cracked white with each strike of lightning. He had a sneer on his face and he swung his sword viciously at his opponent. I could see his muscles bulging under his coat as the rain made it stick to his skin. He was strong, and in his element. But the barbarian was stronger, and would soon overpower him. I raced towards them, determined to help. But the second I went near them, Norman's gaze flicked to me. In his brief distraction, the barbarian took advantage, and jabbed.
"NO!" I shrieked as the blade went into Norman's torso. The sword fell out of Norman's hand, and he collapsed when the barbarian ripped his own sword out of Norman. I lunged forward, fueled by rage, and sliced at the barbarian with Edward's sword. I managed to get him in the side, where he cried out in agony. I pulled it out, and stabbed at the barbarians torso. He let out a gurgled cry, and crumbled to his knees. I attempted to rip the blade out, but it was lodged firmly. He fell to his side, dead.
"Norman!" I cried, dropping down to his side. An ugly gash was visible, and blood was spilling out of it. He took several ragged, heavy breaths, and I took his face in my hands. "Darling? C'mon, stay awake!" I wailed, tears streaming down my face. I didn't know where the 'Darling' came from, but it slipped out. Rain was splashing on me, and I was soaked to the bone.
"Isabelle?" He mumbled, lifting a hand to my face. He grunted in pain as the movement strained his side. I leaned down over him instead. "What the hell are you doin' out here?"
"A barbarian broke into my cell. Jack saved me, but then I saw you and I thought you needed help." I explained.
"Ya shouldn't've been on the beach that night." He growled, clutching his side as I helped him sit up slightly.
"But I was." I retorted, holding him close. I barely realized it at the time, but the barbarians were racing away when they found out about their dead leader.
"Ya shouldn't have." He countered bitterly.
"But I was. And now I'm here. You'll be fine, Norman." I declared. "You have to be fine."
"Captain!" I heard Jack shout. I glanced up, surprised to see only men and bodies on the ship. The other ship was sailing away. Jack stopped in front of us, his eyes wide with horror.
"Help me up." Norman hissed, leaning forward but only hissed in pain.
"Norman, you're in no condition to stand-" I began.
"I said help me up, dammit!" Norman roared, clutching his side. Jack obediently lifted Norman's arm and wrapped it around his shoulders. Helping his captain to his feet, I rushed to Norman's other side. His staggered breaths echoed in my ear as we helped him to the captains cabin. It was at an agonizingly slow pace, but Norman held firm, and braved each step. When we were right outside the door, Norman turned around.
"Gentlemen! We have won the battle tonight! But no battle is won without casualties. We have lost many brave men, and they shall be buried at sea tomorrow at noon!" Norman declared. I heard shouts from the remaining pirates. But right after his brief speech, Norman started to wobble. Jack and I immediately helped support him, and led him back into the captains quarters.
